Crypto is largely a mix of cypherpunks, gambling addicts, and scammers.

The cypherpunks hate the scammers and roll our eyes at the gambling addicts just as much as the haters do, but you're going to need our help to navigate the authoritarian hellscape to come.

I'm sooooo fricking old

From the New York Times:

"The Cypherpunks interacted mostly through something called an internet mailing list. Ancestors of today’s message boards, mailing lists were large group emails in old typewriter font that subscribers received in their inbox."

“Mr. Gilmore” there is John Gilmore, cofounder of the EFF, founder of the Cypherpunks, who can also eat shit for carrying water for Tim May’s “troublesome views”.

I can't stop laughing at "through my intrepid reporting, I've learned that the person who invented bitcoin was VERY LIKELY on the cypherpunks 'mailing list'"

cypherpunks at 14 is about the right age, developmentally speaking
December 17, 2024 at 5:56 AM
The cypherpunks were able to enshrine encryption into the web without most folks caring because it just needed to be adopted by software producers, the web platform and websites.
How do we promise a social web that resists enshittification and where you own your data, yet abstract away the idea that folks on the network should, at a minimum, be able to chose where their data lives?

I have an entire chapter in my book on the effects cybernetics, Brand and new communalism, cyberlibertarianism, cypherpunks, and the "hacker ethic" had on the tech ideology we're all now living with.

Wild to have an entire article about the cypherpunks and no mention of Assange.
