photo: my pics of the giant bald cypress tree. Their roots develop “knees” (1st pic) for aeration & support. Nature teaches what we need to stand tall‼️

Yesterday an old friend from Louisiana told me about bald cypress trees, how they can form roots 25 feet horizontally underground and the roots can’t be linked to one individual tree. They are a network.

They withstand hurricanes too!

I think that’s beautiful so I wanted to share it.

Took my canoe out and explored these bald cypress trees 🩷🩷🩷 definitely made me feel like a bog witch.
I want to go again when the leaves change!!! I bet it'd be so pretty

Growing up in East Texas, we often went canoeing on Caddo Lake which is dominated by cypress trees hung with Spanish moss.

One of the things you learn about quickly are the cypress knees, which are projections from the cypress roots that stick above water.

Pneumatophores are so cool! Little snorkles for trees that need roots to breath underwater. These are from a swamp cypress and act to bring oxygen to the roots under the surface

The swamp-dwelling ‘bald cypress’ is today’s #SpookyScience feature (and Louisiana’s state 🌲)!

The bald cypress is a pneumatophore, with roots growing just below the surface then protruding ⬆️ (believed to help the tree breathe). The tree’s “knees” don’t always look this spooky, but what a shot 📸 🧪
