Why we turned a Dublin street into a playground
The D7 Play Streets initiative is about showing what a simple reallocation of public space which puts children first could look like.

Lovely to see a #d7playstreets scene out in the wild below - this is from one of our first play streets.

I think it really captures the potential of intervention like this for reimagining our streets to support and encourage play and (intergenerational!) community!
It's time to flip the script on harmful #Motonormativity language

"Car free zone", "Low Traffic Neighborhood" and other similar terms used to describe pedestrian first places still highlight car first thinking.

What are some creative ways we can rebrand OUR spaces?

I saw an argument that "cultural nostalgia" has been ceded to the political right in contemporary discourse and how necessary it is to contest that turn.

Against that background, I think that reclaiming our streets for play is one of the most powerful things we can do ...

An additional benefit of the temporary traffic management arrangements for #25playstreets #d7playstreets is they make crossing roads like this (Old Cabra Road into lower Cabra Drive) much less intimidating for pedestrians.

If you’re on or near any of the play streets in Dublin today and have any pictures of street play that you’re happy to share, use #25playstreets or #d7playstreets here so we can find them and build the case for doing 100 play streets next year!!

(or tag @d7playstreets on instagram).

👏

An inspiration for our efforts to achieve in Dublin what @playingout.bsky.social did in the UK!

(the beauty of the temporary closure approach to street play provision is that it's flexible enough to reflect changing needs and demands of communities) #d7playstreets

This reminds me of the announcement last year in Paschal Donohoe's constituency newsletter that D7 Play Streets, had "grown into a dedicated programme helping residents to temporarily close streets to traffic for supervised play".
There is, unfortunately, still no such programme.

OK...this rocks 🤩

The Spel Bel ("play bell") ... child presses the bell at the playground and any parents signed up for notifications get an alert when the bell rings!

No reason why you couldn't also do it for street play (in fact I might!)

Absolutely! This meeting is really just for people to join the Committee but would love to keep in touch with as many people as possible who are interested in supporting street play around where they live. Send an email to: d7playstreets@gmail.com and we'll add you for any updates.

Then and now ... street play in Dublin 7

@frankmcdonald60.bsky.social

(also illustrating why parking strategy shouldn't only be about monetising - "managing" - demand or the economic cost to the Council of reducing supply)

If you want to reclaim your streets for play, please contact your local Councillor and/or local area office in Dublin - as an individual or community group - and ask how they can help support "Street Play" road closures in your area

(you can also mail d7playstreets@gmail.com if you need any help)

Yesterday morning #d7PlayStreets presented a proposal to Dublin City Council's Central Area Committee to set up a dedicated 'Street Play' committee. Its purpose would be to help communities deliver regular opportunities for unstructured play on the streets where they live...
