A Danish film adaptation of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs's 19th-century queer Gothic story "Manor" premieres in Denmark this September. Here's what to know about "No Rest for the Wicked" — and where you can ...

The article presents a biographical overview of Danish actress, dancer, and performer Lilian Ellis (1907–1951), highlighting her artistic career across European cinema, theatre, and radio during the interwar and wartime periods. Born Ellis Stampe Bendix in Denmark, she trained in ballet under prominent instructors Asta Mollerup and Jenny Møller before performing with influential choreographer Michel Fokine in Paris. By age 16, she was already active in professional dance companies and later formed her own troupe, touring internationally in ballet and revue performances. Ellis transitioned into film in the late 1920s, debuting in the silent film era and quickly rising to prominence in German cinema. Between 1928 and 1931, she became a leading lady in both silent and early sound films, appearing in productions such as 'Der Leutnant Ihrer Majestät,' 'Im Prater blüh'n wieder die Bäume,' and 'Wiener Herzen.' She adapted successfully to sound films, participating in notable titles including 'Tausend Worte Deutsch' and other German-Austrian productions. After 1931, she returned to Denmark but continued working across Europe, including theatre engagements in Berlin, Paris, and later London. In the 1930s and 1940s, Ellis expanded into stage revues and radio broadcasting, working with Scandinavian and British networks. She also appeared in Danish and Swedish films during World War II, including 'Alle går rundt og forelsker sig' (1941) and 'En melodi om våren' (1943), the latter marking her final leading film role. After marrying editor Mogens Lind, she gradually withdrew from cinema, focusing instead on radio, translation of theatrical works, and occasional performances. Her later career included contributions to radio programs and early television appearances in the United States. Ellis died in 1951 at age 43 following complications from kidney disease. The article emphasizes her versatility as a performer and her ability to transition across multiple entertainment mediums during a rapidly changing era in European performing arts.
