After 40+ years of freelance inking, some axioms:
1. Ink as much with white paper as with black ink.
2. Choose line width/pen nib in relation to final printed size.

Naked man paddling atop an immense naked dead man, all amidst an endless sea. Illo from the German edition ofCocktails by @dapowell, an anthology of verse by a really worthwhile American poet. These poems are often focused on the impact of AIDS in the USA and other aspects of life as it was lived in a certain era. Of all the books I've done, this is my wife's favourite, both for art and poetry. It was a white stone book in every possible way, despite my knowledge that I really should have it inked somewhat differently. Of course, the fee was a laugh but that's often that the price one pays to work on texts by genuinely good authors. It's a balancing act, being a freelance illustrator, but only if you take it seriously.
