BRB need to test this on my ugliest json files 😂😂😂 (does anyone else take wild, hand-drawn notes on json structures while parsing them?)

Positron 2026.11 adds an object explorer! It's like our data explorer, but for hierarchical rather than rectangular data.

It works great with all kinds of lists, models, dicts, and JSON and has support for deep searching, sticky scrolling, and inspecting.

This week on Counting Stuff, bad(?)good(?) news? in that just like the act of writing is thinking, the act of actually looking at, facing, and manipulating your data is also thinking. So you can't just automate away your EDA #dataBS

Data job ads keep getting longer, but across data roles they ask for the same six things: data engineering, cloud, analytics and BI, machine learning, programming, and soft skills.

Here's what each one means in practice.

PSA for anyone dealing with stockout errors in GCP, particularly in Cloud SQL: if your workload supports it, it seems like ARM-based machine classes have considerably more availability than x86-based classes, especially at higher vCPU counts. Hopefully I can save someone some headache. #dataBS

In which I argue #rstats is a production language, discuss about zero-trust security in @ricochet.rs, and claim we're living the prequel to Dune.

In this week's newsletter I muse on how to make it easier to build agentic pipelines.
There's also links to articles on the data platform product navigator, rebuilding LinkedIn's tracking infra, and moving away from DuckDB.

Agentic pipelines are just pipelines
What do we need to lower the cost of deploying AI?

Write code your data team can read and maintain.

In job ads that shows up as clean code and code reviews, data structures and algorithms, and version control with Git.

If you want a data engineering job, these are the tools to learn:

- Apache Spark
- Python and SQL
- dbt and Airflow
- Kafka and real-time pipelines

This is the core of the job.

You don't need to master every skill on a data job ad before you apply.

Get strong in one or two, know the basics of the rest, and show it with a real project.

Yes, Excel is still in data job ads.

For analytics and BI roles, the usual list is advanced Excel and SQL, one of Power BI, Tableau or Looker, and statistical analysis.

In data hiring, the skill that often decides who gets the offer isn't technical.

It's communication and data storytelling, plus the job-hunt basics: a LinkedIn profile and network, a CV that matches the job, and practice at interviews.

For machine learning roles, it's not enough to know how models get trained. You need to know how they get deployed too.

The usual list: Python (sometimes R), scikit-learn, PyTorch or TensorFlow, and model deployment and MLOps.

You don't need AWS, Azure and GCP to get a data job. You need one.

Pick the one that comes up most in the jobs you want (and, frankly, the one whose UX you can live with) and learn it properly. The others will feel familiar later, because most core services have an equivalent.

P-hacking as a service:

In 2008, triples were 59% higher during a new moon!

In 1954, HBP were 54% lower during a full moon!

(Those are real.)

Who needs Gemini to P-hack badly when I can P-hack well? Should I make this a bot? I can add arbitrary phases: "when 42% illuminated…"
