Author, filmmaker, actor and musician Adele Bertei has publicly challenged producer David Holmes' account of his involvement in the creation of the late Sinéad O’Connor's final unreleased album. The dispute followed Holmes' Instagram post marking the third anniversary of O’Connor's death, in which he shared personal messages from the singer and described the unfinished record, titled 'No Veteran Dies Alone', as a 'stone cold classic' that he hoped might one day be released. Holmes also suggested the album was a heartfelt tribute to O’Connor's children and the wider world. Bertei strongly rejected that portrayal in a series of Instagram posts, alleging that although Holmes initially worked with O’Connor on early recordings, she later removed him from the project because she was dissatisfied with his production. Bertei accused Holmes of exploiting O’Connor's memory by sharing private messages and implying he was primarily responsible for the unreleased album. She argued that the record is 'beyond magnificent' but maintained that Holmes should not receive credit for a project from which she claims he was ultimately excluded. Bertei also suggested that any future release should be handled by those entrusted with preserving O’Connor's artistic legacy and only when the timing is appropriate. NME reported that it had contacted a spokesperson for Holmes for comment, but no response had been published at the time of writing. The disagreement comes as O’Connor continues to be widely remembered for both her influential music career and her outspoken views on political, religious and social issues following her death in July 2023.
