E'rahez sits on a bench holding an infant in swaddling clothes, his expression full of quiet awe. Calu'to smiles down from where he stands beside him, one hand on his hip and another on E'rahez's shoulder. Both men are dressed in little ladies' day livery in pastel colors, though E'rahez's hair is grown out long and a cane rests against the bench beside him, suggesting he's still recovering from his injuries in Ultima Thule.

I didn't post (or even write) enough to fill an ao3 wrapped for 2025, but I DID write more than I have in many years. Here are just a few snippets of things, posted or otherwise, that I am proud of:

E'rahez leaned down and pressed their foreheads together, the masks clunking softly as he did so, and closed his eyes. "I don't think we did it right," he whispered breathlessly, smiling widely all the same.

Calu'to gently set E'rahez on his feet again, keeping their foreheads pressed for a moment longer. After the moment had passed he stood a half step back, reaching up with trembling hands to trace calloused fingertips over the edges of E'rahez's mask. Then he gingerly pulled the mask from E'rahez's face and held it out for him to see. E'rahez gasped—the mask had changed color from an ashy grey to a deep brown. He hadn't noticed it right away, now that the sun had well and truly set and the only light came from the lamp posts and the fireflies, but Calu'to's mask had changed too. With shaking hands of his own he too reached up and removed Calu'to's mask, taking in his beloved's face for the first time all day.

"I don't know," Calu'to murmured, his eyes shining and cheeks wet. "It sure felt right to me."

#daybreakboys Calu’to, without question. Him being a tank aside, he’s very, VERY protective over his family, but none more so than E’rahez because E’rahez is so busy taking care of everyone else. It’s not wholly altruistic either—he’s got a jealous streak a mile wide XD

And so it was that, at the first lull in conversation with one reveler or another, E'rahez gently coaxed Calu'to from his seat at their table and waved their guests off with the excuse of wanting to dance. Most were far too lost in their cups to see the lie for what it was and grinned and shooed them merrily, turning to each other in delighted discussion. From there it wasn't hard to duck into the shadows of one of the village homes and drag Calu'to behind him.

canon: caluto doesn't mind either way, he'll do what erahez wants. erahez is terrified of traumatizing any kids the way his dad did him, not that he thinks he'll abuse them but that the risk of endangerment/orphaning is high. he's happy being a doting uncle ;v;

E'rahez cast one last look over his shoulder at Calu'to as he was dragged away once more. Calu'to watched him go, unable to tear his eyes away from E'rahez's radiant figure, until Okhi shifted in his lap and he realized she'd not gotten up to join the others. She stared up at him with an intensity that should have surprised him, but didn't. His precocious niece certainly was his brother's child!

"Is there anything else you'd like to know?" he prompted, booping her nose. She wiggled and batted at his hand, and stared a moment longer, before the intensity melted. She shook her head, but beckoned him down with a wave of her hand, like she wanted to tell him a secret. Calu'to, doting uncle that he was, obliged her.

"I'm glad that Uncle Rahez is your person," she whispered into his ear. "'Cause I think he makes you happy."

And if that didn't go straight through his heart! He blinked, his eyes suddenly burning, and he stopped himself from gaping openly at her by pulling her into a tight hug and pressing a kiss to the crown of her head.

"That he does, sweetling. That he does."
