trying out collabora office. it's fine, looks a lot more modern compared to libreoffice and i think has a bit more features going on? doesn't have a dbms though so i'll just stick to libreoffice but really it just kinda feels like that one xkcd comic about 15 competing standards

Or if not, a DBMS and query language with equivalent functionality.

I worked for the US Patent Office and Dept of Labor. Yeah, there is SQL, whether it be MS SQL SERVER or endless just about any other DBMS. I just cannot fathom.

Database management is more than persistence.

Beyond persistence, a DBMS also provides access rights (GRANT), schema enforcement (types, constaints), schema evolution (ALTER), concurrency control (TX isolation, deferred constraints), a query language…

Persistence is simple, DB managemant is hard.

Over on Twitter, it's 2025 and people are still proposing terrible ideas for using blockchain databases.

Why would anyone want to use a P2P BFT DBMS to track disease outbreaks? Put it in a centralized DBMS. At least now only 50% of replies are in favor of it. That's progress...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@openlink/117316177093179070

AI Agents need governed access to live systems of record, in a loosely coupled fashion using open standards — not more DBMS-specific wiring that creates compounding technical debt and more data silos.

There's so many problems in modern tech stacks that wouldn't exist if people weren't weirdly allergic to using a DBMS. Up to and including "I'm going to use an expensive LLM to wade around in all this content I own to give me an approximation of an answer."

"Why Files If You Have a DBMS?" www.cs.cit.tum.de/fi... is partly an updated version of "To BLOB or Not To BLOB" (arxiv.org/abs/cs/070...) from 2006, and interestingly, despite the almost 20 year gap, the crossover point is still around a 1MB payload.

CW: High Thoughts

I realized today that DBMS (Database Management System) is just an anagram of BDSM.

Totally relevant. Sollux and Marcie function off an external database and need some kind of DBMS, so you best believe I’m making it sentient. 😏😏😏

I’ve managed Oracle databases in the early 00s. There really wasn’t that much choice tbh, at least for the applications we were writing.

These days they’re not on my radar for enterprise applications.
