#decARcerate
Maybe California isn’t as progressive as you would like, but we did significantly decarcerate under Proposition 47. The cops blame that for every ill but crime has gone down regardless.

“Rather than decarcerate these populations of young people and find community-based alternatives or step-downs for as many of them as possible, they basically shift the youth around from facility to facility to avoid noncompliance,” Shields said.

Idaho underfunds K-12 schools, higher education, behavioral health, drug prevention programs, victims' services, foster care programs,....every program that REDUCES crime. We need to decarcerate and fund people, not build 3 MORE PRISONS!

decarcerate the schools please
ICE SHOCK GLOVE BACKLASH: "I personally am sickened to learn our schools have been used as a test bed for a new law enforcement technology." @hurwitz.bsky.social on the globe beat found them being used in schools.
Cops love ICE's new shock gloves. Parents want them out of schools.
Omaha requested 40 pairs of the gloves for just under $66,000 in 2025.

Remember: Summers are only getting hotter, and heat waves are getting deadlier, especially for people behind bars. The system is not willing or capable of protecting folks from the effects of climate change.

It's time to decarcerate.

Quadrupled pretrial detention & deadly neglect, especially hitting those with mental illness – a catastrophic system failure. Investing in community care & ending profiteering off suffering is essential. #Massroots #InvestInCommunities #Decarcerate #MentalHealthMatters
The number of people jailed pretrial has nearly quadrupled since the 1980s; people with mental-health issues tend to be detained much longer than the rest of the population. Sarah Stillman reports on a crisis of care in county jails across the nation.

“If it gets enacted in Arkansas, then Texas and other states kind of ping pong off each other when it comes to these draconian policies,” explains Kaleem Nazeem, Co-President of decARcerate. “This could have a disastrous effect on people in other states, especially in the southern region.” 📚❤

3/ Proposed legislation written by Phill and Timothy Johnson, the PRRA, would also provide #NorthCarolina a way to decarcerate. Alleviating the "understaffing crisis" can be solved only by reducing the number of people who are behind the wall.

Receivership, while appropriate at this time, is not a silver bullet. Rikers must close. We need to decarcerate and invest in true public safety solutions.

Prison healthcare costs are rising at 10% a year, and w/ an aging prison population that number isn't coming down. Unless we can decarcerate, prison healthcare costs will mean less $ for schools, roads, and prevention.
