Decentralized election systems honestly pretty cool

Hierarchical systems divide and conquer. Decentralized systems connect and empower. True strength lies in collective action.

States are in charge of elections to keep them fair. That's how it works. Within the states, systems are highly decentralized. It's easy to see when you're voting.

We love decentralized systems, don't we folks
Trump reminding us that our crazy decentralized election system turns out to be stunningly secure

Hitler’s rise and Trump’s second term show how authoritarian figures exploit democratic systems to consolidate power, emphasizing the need for resistance and decentralized structures.

Capitalism is *all about*, at its core, building decentralized systems which on inspection turn out to be centrally controlled, or controlled via a "one dollar one vote" democracy of the five or six richest people in the system.

The decentralized internet systems that capitalism builds reflect this

It's not a matter of relying on institutions. It's a matter of having 1000s of heavily fragmented super-decentralized locality-run voting systems, and layers of equally fragmented at-least-as-decentralized components feeding into those systems

relying on our institutions has worked great so far

Centralized power leads to injustice and control. Decentralized networks can empower communities to build transparent, accountable systems. #BindingChaos #Decentralization

Yeah. This is the other point that's so important. We *need* decentralized systems across the board to protect democracy. We need people to have the power to control their online experiences, rather than oligarchs.

I swear @iroh.computer is erasing basically every network annoyance I could have possibly encountered when ideating about decentralized systems

Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi has published principles for leading the Armed Forces, prioritizing soldiers' lives, decentralized decision-making and technological superiority through large-scale use of drones, robotic platforms and automated systems. #Ukraine

Transparency, collaboration, and collective responsibility are the antidotes to corrupt, centralized power. Decentralized systems are the future of justice and freedom #BindingChaos

Yes, this. Turns out open, decentralized systems also lead to more experimentation with business models, including business models that can be more aligned, rather than extractive.

i hope more people realize that @graze.social + @bsky.app is a form of monetization that has never existed before in the history of social media
Our first donation from @graze.social feed monetisation earnings: $100 CAD to @transrights.northsky.social 💚

Excited to announce our collaboration with @ipfs.tech and https://dasl.ing on two new standards for the next thousand years of decentralized social video: S2PA and MUXL!

Together they give us a standard for self-certifying and content-addressable media in the decentralized social ecosystem.

We're all used to it by now but it's pretty weird that the guy getting rich selling electric cars and decentralized solar/battery systems is a die-hard republican.

They are...content? Sleeping? I dunno, they have decentralized nervous systems so they don't have feelings. They kinda just hang out in the sand their whole life 🤷‍♀️

Germany allocated €70 million to support decentralized energy and heating. The funds will help up to 2.6 million people access heat, water, and power amid intensified Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. Equipment will include hybrid generators, pellet systems, and solar-battery units,

I dunno, at least malls have something resembling decentralized water and electric systems

Technologists are always trying to create systems that are *theoretically* resistant to government control.

But governments don't care if your system is theoretically resistant to government control. Governments will always render your *theoretically* decentralized system *practically* centralized.
I'd have to read more about the "protocols, not platforms" approach to see how resistant it actually is, in practice, to a billionaire finding ways to close off the ecosystem.

"Enclosure" of the commons (in the English common law sense) is THE defining battle of capitalism. Wars are fought over it.

Bluesky is 95% incredibly sophisticated engineering systems to make social systems meaningfully resilient and decentralized and 5% petty bureaucrats who demand to be universal load-bearing infrastructure, and they make all the decentralization meaningless because they're in charge.
Just got this email and didn’t even know I had @moderation.bsky.app blocked but now I don’t lol. But I guess permanent suspension is happening if people block? Yikes.

Looks legit too? Just started my day and wasn’t anticipating this

Broadly speaking non-state justice systems are characterized by their network topologies. Either

1) fully distributed
2) decentralized meshes
3) decentralized discrete clans

Nothing's shaken my faith in decentralized, collective systems quite like living in a furry house lmao

I also firmly believe that online real time disaster comms cannot be trusted to private companies - and that this is yet another compelling argument for designing decentralized social media systems that are still really easy for non-tech people to use.
I completely agree. The context switching on social media around disaster communications that we’ve all sort of fallen awkwardly into over the last 15 years is a terrible system.
These tools need to be in public hands. And, at the risk of being more optimistic still, disaster comms *probably* shouldn't have to happen in the same place where we spend the rest of the time shitposting.
