The pre-Islamic script from Dhofar was undeciphered and therefore there are no inscriptions of this type in #OCIANA. Now we have the decipherment of the main variant of the Dhofari alphabet: t.co/ngtzPB9ZPz

The first cuneiform text found after George Smith's decipherment of the Epic of Gilgamesh's Flood Tablet in 1872 was a literary text called šarru ana dīni lā iqūl, or 'The King Does Not Regard the Law'.

'The King Does Not Regard the Law' concerns rulers who act out in a state's self-interest:

pristine Minoan paradise uncorrupted by Greeks). The decipherment of Linear B did not put an end to the Dorian invasion hypothesis, though! In fact, it helped fuel it further, and the reason comes down to dialectology. 5/

Landmark in knowledge: Jean-François Champollion, French philologist, founder of Egyptology, announced decipherment of Rosetta Stone hieroglyphs #OTD 1822. Discovered in 1799, the granodiorite Stele has been most popular display at British Museum from 1802.

The entire of Heaven Vault’s spoken language was built this way. Eg “Maersi” has a translation which shares syllables with “Elasra”, Aliya’s surname, enabling the decipherment of the true meaning of “Heavens Vault” in Book 4.

Maersi is “Mars with a few more vowels”. (Iox is Io with an X on it)

The Cypriot Syllabary was deciphered fairly early, thanks to some nice bilingual inscriptions, and it was the phonetic values of similar-looking signs in the Cypriot Syllabary that provided one of the keys to the eventual decipherment of Linear B. 18/

The GRA was the first statutory codification of legal sex/gender in UK history, and pretty straightforward, yet we've had years of chucklefucks disingenuously pretending it's some complex ergodic literature in need of decipherment because they don't like its very plainly obvious conclusions.
Fundamentally, the structure the Supreme Court has built is that we have a whole act prescribing how you change gender (GRA2004) and a protected characteristic of changed gender (EA2010) which combine to provide no legal protection for having changed your gender.
I really don't get what the fuck Bridget Philipson thinks she's doing. This guidance is worst than useless. Why not just push through legislation to tell the Supreme Court they're wrong?

If rongorongo is a written language, it would make Rapa Nui one of the few Polynesian cultures known to have developed writing independently.

Yet, its decipherment faces major challenges. (4/6)

That makes no sense and the hypercaffenation isn’t helping the decipherment

‘The word “decipherment” is in a sense a misnomer. Ancient scripts are not ciphers. They were not designed to be unintelligible to outsiders or intentionally deceive.’

(1) that the decipherment of Linear B proved the existence of the Greek language in Greece at this point, so there could have been no Greek invaders, and (2) that there is no archaeological evidence for invaders/migrations because of the strong continuity in material culture. 3/

My best decipherment:

“They investigated me for month (sic) - found NOTHING!!
So 15 year old charges resulted.
It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.
Whatcha want me to do - bust out crying!!
NO FUN - NOT WORTH IT!!”

Honestly, I think a fake note would be less weird.

The decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing took some big steps forward in the 1960s and 70s, and I always loved the alien scripts Star Trek came up with, mostly in the third season.

Tragically, this decipherment was only necessary because of a one-man Spanish Inquisition, a deliberate, decades-long campaign by a single Catholic priest, Diego de Landa, to destroy the Mayan language & culture.
One Catholic Priest Destroyed the Entire Mayan Written Language
The priest, Diego de Landa, wiped out all knowledge of the written language, and nearly destroyed the spoken language too.

Until archaeologists turn up way more tablets, unicity distance makes it essentially impossible for any decipherment to gain total acceptance the way Ventris' analysis of Linear B did

In the decipherment of cuneiform truth imitated myth, since the test–of scholars working in isolation to produce basically identical translations of a Babylonian text to prove the method was real–precisely echoes the myth of the LXX:72 sages independently producing the exact same Greek of the Torah
Finally, an article on the decipherment of cuneiform that does justice to the many figures involved, the timeline, competition, and sheer philological grit.
