To achieve these figures over a summer of annual leave, targeted cuts and violently compressed timelines is nothing short of remarkable. Lucky to be part of such a collective. ✊

While there is some relief in the threat of compulsory redundancies being removed, we are also thinking of the amazing colleagues we are losing through so-called voluntary redundancy.

These colleagues are experts in their fields, they are our academic community, and they are fantastic educators

If you have not posted your ballot yet, do it TODAY. A strong ballot result will help us fight for the University we want. Will help protect us. Will help #DefendExeterUni

For now though, we rest, reconvene, and gather our strength for whatever comes next. Because the Union makes us strong 🌻💗✨

Standing in solidarity together has been what has got us this far. A strong ballot is now the best option we have in order to #DefendExeterUni. Vote now, vote yes. 💪

Great piece from my PGR colleague @zkadodz.bsky.social about the cuts, "A supervisor is not an abstract academic who can be replaced at a moment’s notice. My supervisors are the foundation of my whole project". Working with PhDs is SO central to academic life: they've not been considered at all 😧

My 3rd thread on the dispute at Exeter Uni. What are we fighting for? Is it just to save jobs? No. We need a workplace that is run by the expert professionals that make up the staff body. This 🧵 explains the governance reform proposals we have put to Council, Senate and the Uni Exec
#DefendExeterUni
This initiative, like so many others our members led on autonomously, is amazing and very simple. It demands a more equal balance of academic staff on Council, that senate have more elected members, that council is only quorate with 50% academic reps etc. ‘Lay’ council members are just not qualified

A thread on the dispute at Exeter Uni. #ucu #defendexeteruni @ucu.org.uk

On 15 June HR called Exeter UCU into a confidential meeting and informed us they would be putting over 500 colleagues at risk of redundancy and expected to loose around 200 staff. The number of c.150 you’ll have seen is FTE.

The accommodation crisis preceding the teaching crisis, with fewer teachers than usual after redundancies. And, possibly, industrial action. #DefendExeterUni
British universities are now gripped by the ultimate madness. Some unis are bankrupting everyone else accepting students they can't even take and have to leave in limbo... While putting everyone on redundancy notice! It's crazed. Still no-one will intervene.

Wildfires. Drought. Record-breaking heat.

Exeter University’s response? Close Geography in Cornwall and put vital climate expertise at risk.

We need this expertise more than ever.
