I placed a conversation with white people on raise, since it uses real people talking about their experiences on race

Mapplebeck is further to the right because of the real text and authentic footage she uses to create her piece and how she is able to create this emotional environment for viewers #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

it felt the most "staged". #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

Mothlight was placed on the far left because of the interpretation that there is no forced interpretation and that is a raw piece that isn't overbearing #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

Youngman sits further to the right than Clint but more left than Mapplebeck because of its satirical construction, and how its message is delivered in order to help persuade people #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

Stephenson & Foster are placed more towards the left because of the raw interviews it uses and how the editing and selection of people keep it still not completely to the left #hwa5 #defendtheplacement
October 19, 2026 at 3:29 AM
I put Mothlight all the way to the left because it is just a collection of real pictures with no other techniques to guide interpretation or tell a story. So it sticks out to me as the most obviously nonfiction short doc. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

In the middle, I would put beyond this place because it combines real stories with subjectivity in the form of poems and storytelling. Combining objective truth with the audience's subjective interpretation of the meaning. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

How to Make an Art:
I put this closest to fiction bc hes literally performing this exaggerated character and joking the whole time. But its still using that performance to say something real abt art, which is why I wouldnt put it completely at the end. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

Then I had placed Clint Smith because he was talking about real life experiences, and we were able to have a walk-through of his daily day, and makes us feel more real connected with him

I placed this documentary in the middle because it combines real experiences with creative storytelling. Clint talks about real issues, but the visuals, and editing make the story feel more art and emotional. It balances reality with the director's interpretation. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement #HTMA

Clint Smith: Listening to what Ashley said, I agree with the placement. At first I didn't agree but hearing her say that it's not true. That Clint stages certain things to make it better than what they seem #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

160 Characters:
I put this basically in the middle bc the texts are literally real, but once she picks certain messages, adds narration, and recreates moments they become a whole new story. The evidence is real but the presentation is way more personal. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement
October 19, 2026 at 3:21 AM
Mothlight:
I put this pretty far toward subjectivity bc the materials are real moth wings/plants but it doesnt show them in a normal “this is reality” way at all. It feels more like Brakhage showing us his way of seeing them. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

160 characters is next because the video uses real text messages about the relationship and how also makes me wonder how differently. The story would be. If both of them tell the story or if we hear from the other side as well.

The reason I put Youngman's ART THOUGHTZ: How to Make an Art closer to reality, subjectivity, and fiction was that the video was mostly funny. His sarcastic tone and sense of humor made it seem more like a show than a documentary. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

A Conversation With White People on Race:
I put this closest to nonfiction bc its mostly real ppl directly talking abt their own experiences. Obviously the filmmakers still choose what answers we hear, but it feels like the least transformed out of the 5. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement

Beyond This PlaceL
I put this a little more toward the middle bc Clint is telling his actual story, but the visuals make it feel more like memory sometimes. The experience is real but the way we see it is definitely shaped for us. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement
October 19, 2026 at 3:21 AM
I placed Mothlight closest to fiction because it doesn't show reality in a normal way. The filmmaker uses real things from nature, but puts them into fast-moving images that feel more abstract than real. It's more about making us feel something than showing us facts. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement #ML

I put this one closer to reality because it uses real text messages and experiences from the director. However, it's a little more subjective because she chooses which messages to show and how to present them. We're seeing a true story, but from her perspective. #hwa5 #defendtheplacement #160C

#hwa5 #defendtheplacement Finally, I put A Conversation with White People all the way to the reality, subjectivity, and fiction side because I felt that this was the least "Real" documentary. Even the filming style was super staged, with the people placed in front of black backgrounds, taking them
October 19, 2026 at 3:16 AM
art thoughz I had put a kind of closer to fiction, just because he uses like a fake character in a way with jokes to talk about the world, but he does bring up like good points about our and how he represents himself with his appearance.

I actually agreed with Ashley's placement of the first two and used that as a baseline of where to put the other films #hwa5 #defendtheplacement
