There's no other word for it but degeneracy. Trump's mind has degenerated, his party has degenerated, his government has degenerated, & his cultural movement has degenerated. These are the floor sweepings of politics, placed on the highest pedestal more or less by accident.
The ballroom stories are getting weird to read about because they seem increasingly divorced from building a room to hold large formal parties. You skim the news and it's like "President Trump declares ballroom will have lava pit with magma sharks to kill He-Man."

there are certain ideas that are really narrative features of American politics more than actual truths. conservatives are patriotic despite their claims that America has degenerated, they're tough on crime despite embracing many criminals, they're free marketeers despite anti-competitive practices

Underdiscussed problem with the gerontocracy is how much the Young Republicans have degenerated into Arkham Asylum was lost on a lot of important people in both parties until it was too late.
What's happening in America is that, in the most literal sense, internet trolls have taken over the government.

there's a weird whiplash effect in that, since 2000, the private lives of americans simultaneously improved while the country's institutions and civic life more or less continuously degenerated
