And research shows this sort of anonymity increases violence. It is deindividuation.

Deindividuation.

Zimbardo’s deindividuation is a bit dented these days, but sometimes you do feel it’s got explanatory power…
As a guy who used to write car commercials: cars insulate people from other people, strip others of their humanity and make drivers feel invulnerable. Thus they get offended easily and turn to rage. They believe they are all that matters and their will be done. It's an ego unrestrained by morality.

this deindividuation is the key tragedy of the vampires, and it's why they're always hungry, why their dances are uncannily coordinated and in unison; no one can create anything new because they're all just downloaded into the same immortal hard drive.

I've thought for years that that was why zombies were so popular in the years right after the Recession. Pundits said it was about fear of deindividuation, but I saw it as being focused on stories about how we survive when the systems upon systems we rely on and take for granted suddenly collapse.

Between Sinners, Weapons and Pluribus, it sure seems as though there's a MASSIVE wave of anxiety over deindividuation crashing through American culture, huh.

(Also, "anonymity" online isn't the same as "normal" anonymity, since on almost all platforms we build distinct online identities instead of existing as faceless masses, which prevents the kind of deindividuation normally observed in association with anonymity)

Commissioned erotica, LLM's still can't nail a real many-thousand word dom/sub arc if you have any kind of wildcard in the dynamic, like them hesitantly growing to like using a fursuit head for deindividuation and disinhibition leading to discovering enjoying being crated for neurodivergent reasons
How do you compete with all this, if you’re a science fiction writer?

The other thing I’m learning is that anonymity is associated with severity of violence, which is explained by a theory of deindividuation (e.g., it’s easier to feel like you’re acting as an entity instead of as an individual).

But… the studies about the benefits of deanonymizing are pretty mixed.

Fascism seeks to drive a wedge in this moral conscience. It uses dehumanization to vilify the “other” and deindividuation to force conformity and compliance. Loyalty and tribalism are valued above merit and morality. Justice is sacrificed for a misplaced sense of safety. /6

Beyond not wanting to be identified, this regime is intentionally creating an anonymous army to keep the gestapo officers' OWN conscience hidden. Similar to the internet, people are more likely to be horrible when they're able to lose their individuality in anonymity. It's called deindividuation.

Groupthink and Deindividuation

Participating in a really important group-organism's events and activities produces this useful deindividuation where you can actually feel yourself partially running on autopilot

Also, when people are masked, they are more likely to do actions they wouldn't do unmasked.

The Relationship Between Masks and Aggressive Behavior
A review of the literature demonstrates that being anonymous by wearing a mask has been hypothesized to create many psychological effects, but mainly deindividuation. Numerous distinct explanations...

I tacked this onto the relevant post as a kind of footnote, but I’m realizing no one will see it there:

Worth nothing that the studies on deindividuation are rarely about masks specifically. The phenomenon is also related to things like wearing a uniform.

Although I have trends and themes in my art, when I create new art I never worry about whether a new work fits into my personal style of art.

A toxic cocktail of groupthink & deindividuation

This reminds me of deindividuation social experiments where evil is clearly a contagion. I've always been uncomfortable around groups of men in any circumstance. I sense a danger vibe.🤷‍♀️

Worth repeating: de-individuation is a discredited theory and there is no such thing as a de-individuated state:

Just so sickening. The deindividuation needs to be stopped.

The 1969 experiment that demonstrated how people are more likely to inflict pain on others when masked is Philip Zimbardo’s study on deindividuation.

When individuals are anonymous—concealed by masks, hoods, and oversized lab coats—they are more likely to engage in antisocial behavior.
