Ah: Trump talking about the end of the asylum; deinstitutionalisation! I have a lecture on this, in our “Madness & Society in the Modern Age” course unit.
This was in the middle of his two hour long, meandering, slurred press conference today.

You know that things are fucked up when inclusion is now a bad thing. Before the DEI initialism was invented, “inclusion” was used frequently in disability circles to promote deinstitutionalisation and other forms of community integration.

Melancholy objects that hold meaning to you are excluded from monetisation by others. During deinstitutionalisation in the late 90s, some of my clients were in their sixties and had never owned anything their whole lives. Stuff and things are important.

“Deinstitutionalisation.” That was the buzzword, and in those days it made sense because so many of the institutions were horrible.

The plan was to increase the number of community mental health centers to keep people out of those dank places, but we never funded them enough to make that work.

If you don't count this as a highly technical word, DEINSTITUTIONALISATION (or with a Z if you want) and COUNTERREVOLUTIONARIES are the longest words that are *regularly* used jargon and not just at the rare crevices of it

The fact is that deinstitutionalisation aimed to humanise care, but dementia patients now navigate a fragmented system where acute hospitals serve as the default. 25% of acute beds are occupied by dementia patients – and the pressure to shovel them into care homes is horrific.

“People with intellectual disabilities don’t just hold a stake in deinstitutionalisation.
They hold a very short straw.”

I was invited to speak on deinstitutionalisation during European Parliament’s committee workshop last week.

I’m very happy to announce the release of the latest issue of the Italian gender-history journal Genesis. The issue, which I had the great pleasure to co-edit with Marianna Scarfone and Marica Setaro, is dedicated to “Women, Psychiatry, Deinstitutionalisation”.

These are excellent starting points to further research the deinstitutionalisation process from a gender perspective.
Enjoy reading this issue!
