OWS almost handicapped itself by design by refusing to make demands

But if you get to yes, you have to stop protesting!

I remember seeing that "logic" from OWS: "We don't have any demands because demands could conceivably be met"

OWS is another good example of an entirely crank movement - it didn't even try demanding stimulus, and instead ranted about corporate personhood. But BLM and the trans rights movement had actionable demands, and in Germany the trans rights movement even got most of its demands.

Cat Contrafacta Dept:

525,600 me-ows
525,600 demands for kib-ble
525,600 me-ows
How do you measure an *hour* in the life?

LOL RT @adrian_parsons: #OWS protester: "the cops have occupied Zucotti Park, we're just trying to figure out what their demands are."

"organizer[s]" and "demands" strike me as pretty strong words for anything OWS-related, based on what little i do know

(i was in college at the time and didn't keep up with much news of the outside world)

some of the protests in 2020 were half of a good strategy for change, they needed better people in local and state government to turn protester demands into laws, OWS didn't have anyone in government who could make good things happen

Let's hope it doesn't come to violence, in spite of what we see in the historical record. 🤞

I can't help but dream of what might come if the entire world stopped working and buying for just one single day.

And I can't help but envision OWS on steroids, perpetuated and with clear demands. 🤔

OWS was designed to be leaderless. There was no spokesperson or committee to answer questions. It was a grievance movement against crony capitalism. Unlike the civil rights movement who had leaders, demands, manifestos and books written.

To this day I’m still unsure of what exactly OWS wanted.

Problem is, that's also exactly how instance A) would be reported.

I recall OWS with its clear demands and pilot comittees and the press asking some stoned homeless guy on the periphery why he was there, then reporting "There you have it, no idea what they're protesting, just here for the food."

these actions have had clear demands and goals up front with organizing around those demands. ows was for a long time about consensus based movement, ppl were rejecting making demands on the basis of not wanting to collude with the system whatsoever

White Americans have no idea how to protest. 2020 was the doing of black voices and OWS in 2011 was just this side of a drum circle with no leadership, a laundry list of demands that wasn’t focused, and subsequently fizzled out. It will take acute economic pain to drive us away from our couches.

OWS producing justine tunney and everyone with more radical demands than appearing on tv in the Ferguson protests got killed for it. Why bother repressing through it in that fuckin world
June 7, 2026 at 5:37 PM
The problem with OWS is that it DIDN’T make demands, what’s going on with anti-ICE Solidarity today is that their positions are pretty damn clear now, fucking finally.
February 4, 2026 at 9:52 AM
It is. But similar optics. Which is not a good sign for their demands or ability to achieve their goals. Similar to OWS and BLM, I predict they will fail to achieve any stated goals.
April 30, 2024 at 8:00 AM
? ows explicitly avoided making demands for a long time there was eventually a working group formed and the new new deal and 11 points stuff was a splintering point throughout the movement when it came through for a lot of reasons

@nazgul Yes, when it is not progressive protest against right-wing American politics. That has not been effective for a quarter-century.

The one example in that list is OWS — which had nebulous demands none of which were met as well as concrete demands like overturning Citizens, banning […]

It is not an ask, any more than "stop Trump" is an ask. As a spontaneous movement, there was nobody who could even be negotiated with. In OWS, the people trying to create a list of demands were shouted down for accomodationism.

This is Daniel's critique as well, in one of the episodes about Graeber's book. To oversimplify (finding the episode wd explain better), OWS had no actionable demands, Graeber didn't offer any, and thus it went nowhere. Not practical leadership. Politics is about bargaining power, & it slipped away.

I often hear people say "I hope to gd someone is keeping track of everything DJT has undone so we can put things back correctly someday."
My response is
WE need a 900 page manifesto & we need it yesterday. And the list of OWS demands is a good place to start.
Happy S17 to all who celebrate.

@Roy1956 Yes, she’s crawling toward meeting some #OWS demands because she has an inattentive barfly’s sense of recent history.
November 25, 2024 at 4:52 PM
People were critical of the #OWS movement because they didn't have a list of demands or direction...
December 25, 2024 at 5:43 PM
@benzotweet that is why jumping to demands for #OWS is too soon.
