I can see the same thing in demomaking nowadays where people don't do it to feel like they themselves accomplished something, they do it to make sure their name is out there, no matter what.

20+ years of demomaking, and still I'm constantly humbled by graphics programming - it takes less than an hour to become disturbingly apparent that not only do I suck at it, but that I probably always have.

I'm using my job in gamedev to cure my burnout from demomaking. 90% of the people I work or worked with in gamedev care deeply about their friends, and the joy of being helped to create something that you yourself enjoy is incredibly emotional.
Thinking a lot lately about how often people have to say they love working in games, because everyone I know in games is partially dying of burnout, overwork and exploitation.
Like how many people working in games can earnestly actually say they really love it, and aren't at all destroyed by it?

It's a symbiotic thing really.
When I work on games, I need to do things the "right" way, but sometimes it's nice to have a trick or two up my sleeve I learned from demomaking. Similarly, some of demomaking benefits from a more disciplined "professional" approach.

I think about this a lot cos in the genre I'm in (demomaking) you can't really follow up since every post takes 3-4 months to produce, which goes against what "the algorithm" (but really mostly human nature) prefers.
