Here's my comic character design #baddecisionbingo sheet, with two lonely good decisions. In other words, it IS possible to lose even worse than me!

Pogo alone could fill 13 squares and gets bingo all by himself.

✨ OC vs their living space! ✨

I like it when a character's home looks like them. 🙂

#art #ocart #intothesmoke #demonoftheunderground #cookingwithbelmont
Three sets of character art next to environment art. The first shows Merritt and Belmont, a shorter blond man and taller brunet man in formal suits. The environment beside them is an upscale kitchen with white upper cabinets, black lower cabinets, a kitchen island, and white marble counters. The second row shows Samsid, a dark-skinned man with a black cap, dreadlocks, and a military soldier's uniform. Beside him is a dimly lit bedroom with brick walls, a messy palette bed, and pipes serving as clothing racks. Pogo, a small dark-haired man, is sleeping in his bed. The third row shows Blaze, an androgynous man with shoulder-length red hair, a long purple scarf, a black trench coat with tattered edges, and tight-fitting black pants. He's emitting fire from his palms. Beside him is a living room at sunset, with mismatched antique furniture, wall art showing celestial themes, a rug and cushions at the picture windows, a balcony, and a view overlooking the Chicago skyline.

22. OC I didn't expect to love.

"Love" might be a little strong. And no one is *supposed* to love Troy. But after writing him in Merritt's Story and in part of an unreleased Troy POV short ("Troy Story"), this jerk has grown on me. I do love writing him.

#demonoftheunderground #merrittstory
3 cropped panels from the webcomic Demon of the Underground. Panel 1: Troy blushes from intoxication as he watches Merritt sip from a champagne glass. Panel 2: Troy vigorously bro-hugs Merritt with a wide smile, while Merritt looks startled and uncomfortable. Troy says, "Ah, fuck it. I still think you'll change your mind one day. But until then..." Panel 3: Troy smiles at Merritt with one arm wrapped around his shoulders. Merritt smiles awkwardly back at him. Troy says, "If I can have an ally as good as you in the North—as honest as you—I'll take it." #demonoftheunderground Two cropped flashback panels from the webcomic Demon of the Underground. Panel 1: Troy looks downward, his expression serious as he says, "I offered you a top position as my lieutenant general, and a spot in the Elite Squad. I offered you everything." Panel 2: Merritt's face is shown. His eyes are closed, his hair is limp and messy, and his face is bruised. Troy continues, "And you still refused to swear your allegiance."

21. OC I didn't expect to be popular.

Belmont, particularly in #merrittstory. AFAIK, he's my only OC to have had an actual fan club. He was a HUGE risk. No one knew it was enemies to lovers, and I let him go full unbridled bastard enemy for 200K words.

Not so invincible anymore, are you, Belmont?
Cropped panel from the webcomic Demon of the Underground. In the foreground, Mercury says, "I want him back." In the background, Belmont scowls at Mercury while holding up his middle finger and filing its nail. #demonoftheunderground Two panels from the webcomic Demon of the Underground. Panel 1: Merritt, a blond man in a military uniform, looks startled while Belmont, a brunet in a three-piece suit and blue tie, stands in a tunnel behind him, partially cast in shadow. Belmont says, "Of all the things Gray could have stuck you with, he chose a knife." Panel 1: A closer view of Belmont, who smirks while leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets. He says, "I would've done better." Excerpt from the novel series, Devoted: Merritt's Story. Transcript: “Tell me, Merritt. Is there anything you care about besides doing Mercury’s bidding? Is there anyone you wouldn’t toss aside just to get closer to him?” Belmont gave a derisive snort. “I can only imagine how empty your life is outside of serving him.” Merritt’s poker face shot up like a shield before he could feel the sting of Belmont’s keen words. “You can twist my intentions however you want,” he said evenly. “I’m just doing my job.” He tried to slide out from under Belmont, but Belmont shifted and blocked his path. “You want to spend all your waking hours kissing Mercury’s feet? Well, I’ll give you a lesson from his playbook.” He leaned in, letting a single finger slide deliberately down Merritt’s tie. “Mercury always says that everyone in the underground has someone they can’t bear to lose. Someone they rarely talk about because they don’t want their enemies to know. Someone whose loss would just destroy them.” He chuckled. “Now, I don’t have anyone like that. And neither does Mercury. It’s what makes us invincible. You, on the other hand...”

17. Oldest/Youngest OCs

Old: Quinn from #lychgateseries (which I haven't republished since 1st pub went bad). Undead, regenerates FAST, won't use oven mitts, leaves charred skin on her pots & pans.

Young: Annie!! Only ~1 year old. (we don't talk about ferret lifespans here) #demonoftheunderground
A traditional pencil sketch of Quinn from the Lychgate Series. She has an intense face with deeply set eyes and a smirking mouth, long wavy blond hair, and a suit and tie. The sketch is dated 11/30/2018. A cropped preview of a Demon of the Underground sketch minicomic. Annie the ferret looks very angry. Then she jumps at Pogo, who cowers and screams.

16. Tallest and Shortest OCs.

Keeping this to adult humans, both are DOTU characters. Tallest is Gray at 6'5"; shortest is Noble at 4'10". Both are equally terrifying. They share a strong taste for vengeance, lol.

#demonoftheunderground
A cropped panel from the webcomic Demon of the Underground. A burly man with a mohawk, a messy goatee, several piercings, and several scars holds up a playing card with someone's face on it. He says, "I used to know someone like you. He also thought he was too good for the rules. Four panels from a Demon of the Underground bonus minicomic. Panel 1: Troy's grinning mouth is shown alongside a sound effect reading "HEHEHE." Panel 2: Troy, a tall blond man in a military uniform and black armbands, , holds out a tiny object to Noble, a much shorter soldier in a matching uniform with hair that's half-white, half dark. Troy says, "I think this one's more your size, Noble." Panel 3: A close-up of the object is shown. It's a Swiss army knife. Panel 4: Noble looks down at the knife and scowls. Two later panels from the same Demon of the Underground minicomic. Panel 1: Noble stands straddling Troy, who lies on his back on the floor. They now wear uniforms that don't match each other, and Noble wears a jacket with several oversized blades extending from the left sleeve, matching the blades of a Swiss army knife. The longest blades are pointed inches from Troy's face, and he stares at them with fear. Panel 2: A worm's eye view of Noble as she aims the knives and smirks.

14. OCs I neglect.

Pogo, these days. It's not smart, since he's probably responsible for most of my income. But I've been writing him nonstop since 2006 without a break. I just need to broaden the relationship and see other OCs sometimes.

#demonoftheunderground

10. Villain OCs

I *love* my villains. They suck. 🙂

But for years and years now, one man has been hated WAY beyond all others. (And his board of advisors too. 😆)

Along with my art, I'll share my favorite reader memes.

#merrittstory (and #demonoftheunderground to a lesser extent)
A row of nine generic brunet white men in business suits with blue ties who all look alike. From left to right, Wolfram, Logan, Evans, Pratt... or is it Lawrence, Pratt, Taylor, Hale... Are they all Pratt? Does it matter? Standing at the center, looking slightly older than the other men, is King Damen Mercury. A meme where a bunch of knives are pointed at a cat. Pasted on top of the cat's head is Mercury from Devoted: Merritt's Story and Demon of the Underground. A retro 80s text generator displays the words, "Mercury can eat a dick." A meme showing a screenshot from The Office, with some subtitled words replaced. The edited subtitles read, "If I had a gun with two bullets and I was in a room with Troy, Bardia, and Mercury, I would shoot Mercury twice."

4. Fav OC design

I do love Pogo's demon form (Demon of the Underground). HATE drawing it, though. 😆

Also Blaze's "exorcism" outfit (Into the Smoke) and Rainey with her ridiculous hair and missing tooth (DOTU).

(yes, I suck at picking just one)

#demonoftheunderground #intothesmoke #ocart
A cropped portion of a comic page. A dark-haired young man in a black shirt lies in bed clutching his head. A vision of him appears in demon form with wings made of hundreds of snakes, shoulder armor, long gloves, pants with a skirt-like wrap on top, and a bare chest. Blaze's character design from the webcomic Into the Smoke is shown beside a shot of his living room design. Blaze is wearing a long black coat with tattered edges, a purple stole, a black choker with a quite square in the middle, a black shirt and slim-fitting pants, various necklaces, and a hanging chain around his waist with a small cross dangling between his legs. His living room is shown at sunset, with a sofa and additional chairs, wall art showing celestial themes, a rug and cushions at the picture windows, a balcony, and a view overlooking the Chicago skyline. Three shots of Rainey's character design. The first is a color portrait. She is dark-skinned with black hair in an unusual style, pulled up into a row of five wrapped ponytails that fluff out at the top like pom-poms. She has two lip rings on her lower lip, and she wears a military style uniform. In the second image, she is smiling while another woman, Jordana shoves a pool cue up her nose. From this view, a missing tooth is revealed, along with three scars on her left shoulder. She says, "I'm gonna go get another beer. You want one?" Jordana replies, "Get me two." The third image is a pencil sketch of Rainey, where she smiles and holds up a lit match.

To be fair, I did use licensed models in other parts of ITS, so I get some of the "cheat" benefits.

I made all my own DOTU models, though. It's just not so easy to find pre-existing goatercycles and drug chandeliers and underground tournament arenas...

#3D #demonoftheunderground
Screenshot of art from the webcomic Demon of the Underground, showing a chandelier adorned with shot glasses, vials and test tubes full of colorful liquid, and tiny white bowls that each hold a single pill. A portion of a page from the webcomic Demon of the Underground, showing a tournament arena with a circular fighting area surrounded by a moat of dirty water. To the left of the fighting area is a seating area for the fighters. To the right is an elevated area housed by a large arch. Surrounding the fighting area and moat is an elevated octagonal seating area for the audience, with stair-shaped rows of seats. Narration text reads: East Sphere Tournament Grounds, 9:54am A cropped sample from the webcomic Demon of the Underground. A woman with chin-length, wavy brown hair sits on a motorcycle with an Indian ringneck parrot on her shoulder. The motorcycle is shaped like a goat, with horn-shaped handles, glowing eyes, legs on either side of the wheels, and two pipes on either side that look like they might shoot fire or projectiles.

Demon of the Underground is an LGBTQ+ urban fantasy #webcomic about Pogo, a bi half-demon thief who falls into an underground world where 4 warring factions all want him for different reasons. (And he has a ferret named Annie!)

A close shot of two men from the chest up as they are in the midst of battle. In the foreground, a small, dark-haired white man with a long nose and dark shadows under his eyes extends an arm while smiling confidently. He wears a gold cross earring, and a sable colored ferret sits on his shoulder. In the background, a larger black man with a scarred face, goatee, and long dreadlocks bares his teeth and holds a rifle. Title: Demon of the Underground. A two-page spread from the webcomic Demon of the Underground. The first shows Pogo and Samsid having a conversation, while Pogo looks distraught. Pogo says, "I... I should have done something." Samsid replies, "Pfft. What could you have done?" Pogo looks down, then his lip quivers. He leans into Samsid's chest and cries, "Damn it!" while Samsid looks stunned. On the next page, Samsid stands rigidly while Pogo buries his face in his chest. Samsid looks to his right, then his left, bewildered, then looks down at Pogo. Looking resigned, he sets his hand on Pogo's shoulder. Pogo glances to the side to look at Samsid's hand. A two-page spread from the webcomic Demon of the Underground. Belmont and Merritt are arguing on a bridge overpass with airy windows and arches on either side. Merritt says, "You sold me out to the East. I was too close to Mercury, so you set me up for capture just to get me away from him." Belmont replies, "I did what I had to do." He holds up two playing cards with Merritt's face, one labeled 10 and E, the other labeled 5 and N. He says, "But look how well it worked out for you! Soldiers are peasants in the North, but they're the elite of the East. That capture bumped you up five ranks!" Merritt holds his finger in Belmont's face and says, "And it made me your rival instead of your inferior. Don't ever forget that." He leans in close to the taller Belmont's face and says, "You may be a queen card, but I'm a ten now. We're only two ranks apart. I don't need permission to touch you anymore." Belmont smiles at him, inches from his face, and says, "Then touch me." On the next page, Merritt glares up at Belmont. Then his gaze shifts down to Belmont's lips. He grabs Belmont's collar and leans in, about to kiss him. Then, as bright light shines on his face, he glances to his side. Belmont glances as well, with a wicked smile on his face. Sitting on a motorcycle across the bridge is Samsid, wearing a uniform that matches Merritt's. He says nothing as he stares at Merritt. A two-page spread from the webcomic Demon of the Underground, showing a flashback in sepia and yellow tones. Young Pogo puts on an alter boy's vestments. As he dresses, he says to a priest in the background, "Father Hawkins, I... Thank you. You're the only one who's ever... treated me like maybe I'm not all bad." The priest, whose face isn't shown, sets his hand on Pogo's shoulder and says, "Let's go. Everyone is waiting." Pogo walks between two rows of pews with other altar servers, swinging a thurible of incense. In the next panel, a wafer is placed in his mouth, then he sips from a chalice. On the next page, in a dark bathroom, he vomits into the toilet. Golden light radiates from a stained glass window showing an angel stabbing a demon. Pogo's hand grips the edge of the toilet. He raises his head, black liquid oozing from his eyes.

Hey new (and old) people! I'm a cartoonist, author, and illustrator with several projects. Here's a thread with a rundown of them so you know what everything is and where to find it!

#intothesmoke #demonoftheunderground #merrittstory #cookingwithbelmont
Cropped cover art for the webcomic Into the Smoke. An androgynous young man with shoulder-length red hair and tattooed hands appears below a dark, smoky ghost, who caresses the man while inhaling his breath. Swirls and patterns surround them. Text reads: Into the Smoke. An illustration showing four characters in the midst of battle. Behind him, a man with blond, spiky hair holds a syringe dart in his mouth and three more in his fist. Behind him, a woman with a medium-dark skin tone and red hair buzzed on the sides jumps forward with a grenade. Two book covers. Book cover 1: A man with spiky blond hair holds the hand of another man and leans in to kiss the gold ring on his middle finger. Title: Devoted: Merritt’s Story. Book 1. Book cover 2: A man with spiky blond hair and a taller man with slicked brown hair and glasses embrace, about to kiss. The blond holds a syringe to the brunet’s neck, and the brunet holds a knife to the blond’s neck. The blond wears a military uniform with four bands on his sleeve cuff and a blue tie, and the brunet wears a suit with a blue tie. Text reads, Devoted: Merritt’s Story. Book 2. A splash image and main menu of a visual novel. A logo with a flaming spatula reads, "Cooking with Belmont." Behind it are two men standing back to back. One is shorter and blond, and he carries a covered dish. The other, a taller brunet, wears a chef's hat and glasses while carrying a collapsed and dripping lava cake. Behind them on the left, a black man with dreadlocks carries a 1950s style aspic dish. Behind them on the right, a black-haired man with a birthday hat wears a sly expression while about to eat an eggplant slice. Menu buttons read start, load, extras, settings, and quit.

Rereading Demon of the Underground looking for sample pages, and I was reminded of that moment where Pogo threw down a fingerless glove to challenge Samsid to a (very high stakes) duel.

Comic panels from Demon of the Underground. In panel 1, Samsid and Pogo yell at each other from opposite sides of a dining table. Samsid yells, "I'm your King, and you're just a lowly ace. I say ya got no rights." Pogo replies, "Since when?" and Samsid yells back, "SINCE YOU GRABBED YOUR JUNK AT MY DINER TABLE!" In the second panel, Pogo pulls off a fingerless glove. In the third panel, the fingerless glove is thrown down to the table, and Pogo yells, "I challenge you to a DUEL!"

For the record, I DO have "serious" art of all these guys. But, y'know, get a man who can do both or whatever.

#art #intothesmoke #demonoftheunderground #merrittstory
An androgynous man with shoulder-length red hair grits his teeth and squeezes his eyes shut while channeling spiritual fire through the palm of his tattooed, bleeding left hand. His other hand is held by a young white-haired priest standing behind him, his brows furrowed. Blood trickles down the priest’s face from his hairline. A man with spiky blond hair and a taller man with slicked brown hair and glasses embrace, about to kiss. The blond holds a syringe to the brunet’s neck, and the brunet holds a knife to the blond’s neck. The blond wears a military uniform with four bands on his sleeve cuff and a blue tie, and the brunet wears a suit with a blue tie. A tall dark-skinned man with dreadlocks embraces a shorter, younger man with dark hair and bags under his eyes. The younger man closes his eyes and rests his face against the older man’s chest. A young man with blond spiky hair is shown in a battle stance. He holds a syringe dart between his teeth and three additional syringe darts between the fingers of his left hand. His right hand is balled in a fist. Swirls of energy divide his figure in half. His upper half wears a military dress uniform with a four-banded sleeve cuff and a blue tie. His lower half wears a fighter’s uniform with a black armband.

An androgynous man with shoulder-length red hair looks frazzled while he holds a bundle of cilantro up to the face of a growling, angry spirit. A man in a soldier’s uniform stands in a cave, looking up with surprise while a tall, gangly man in a three-piece suit pole dances from a stalactite. A small white man grabs the collar of a larger black man and excitedly yells, while the larger man stares vacantly into space. A man stands in a bedroom, stuck in a button-down shirt and tie.
