Falmouth outlines townwide watershed plans to meet state nitrogen limits
Wastewater superintendent Amy Law presented draft watershed plans that map where sewers, denitrifying septic systems and other strategies would be required to meet state TMDL nitrogen limits; the town aims to finalize internal drafts by end of 2026 and submit permit applications 2027–2030.

The quest for alternative woodchip sources to use in denitrifying bioreactors
Today’s guest blog post comes from Pooja Timilsina. Timilsina is starting her second year as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Iowa State University. Nitrate loading into waterways remains one of Iowa’s greatest water quality challenges, given the state's extensive subsurface tile drainage system. One of the emerging edge-of-field conservation practices that intercepts this water and converts nitrate to nitrogen gas before it mixes with downstream water is the denitrifying woodchip bioreactor.

Health and water officials warn constraints on denitrification and supply could limit density expansions
Falmouth’s health agent and water superintendent told the planning board that denitrifying on-site systems are not equivalent to sewer and that the town’s water withdrawal permits and wastewater nitrogen budgets constrain broad density increases. Officials urged coordination before adopting zoning changes that would raise housing density.

Microbe-Fertilizer Pair Cuts Greenhouse Soil Emissions
Newswise — The study found that inoculating organic fertilizers with the denitrifying bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri NRCB010 significantly lowered cumulative soil N₂O emissions, with the strongest effect observed when the bacterium was combined with mushroom residue organic manure. This combination achieved a 46.5% emission reduction, outperforming hydrochar organic manure and high-temperature pretreated compost. Greenhouse vegetable production relies on intensive fertilizer and water inputs to sustain high yields, but these practices can accelerate nitrogen losses and increase N₂O emissions. Organic fertilizers are widely used to improve soil structure, nutrient supply, and crop quality, yet they may also provide substrates that stimulate N₂O production. Current mitigation approaches include nitrification inhibitors, biochar, and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), but the compatibility between functional bacteria and different organic fertilizer substrates remains insufficiently understood. Therefore, systematic research is needed to determine which microbe–organic fertilizer combinations can reduce emissions while maintaining soil function. A study (DOI: 10.48130/nc-0026-0001) published in Nitrogen Cycling on 04 February 2026 by Weishou Shen’s team, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, shows that NRCB010, especially when paired with mushroom residue organic manure, reduces N₂O emissions by enhancing nosZI-related microbial functions and reshaping the soil microbiome. The researchers conducted a soil microcosm experiment using...

More than a Pile of Woodchips: The Forest Stewardship-Bioreactor Connection
The Forest-to-Farm effort If you’re a regular reader of the ILF Blog, you’ve most likely heard of the Forest-to-Farm effort, an interdisciplinary research-extension effort aimed at increased denitrifying woodchip bioreactor adoption while simultaneously addressing a range of issues facing Iowa’s woodlands and forest products industry. Started in 2019 as a First Year Honors Mentor Program project (budget of $250), the effort has since expanded to ~$1.5 million through combined funding from the US Forest Service, USDA NIFA, NRCS, and the Iowa Nutrient Research Center – each award focusing on individual, yet interrelated, components of the bioreactor system and woodchip supply chain.
