Morocco Targets 1.8 Billion Cubic Meters in Desalination Capacity by 2031
Casablanca – Morocco aims to reach a total desalination capacity of nearly 1.8 billion cubic meters annually by 2031, covering 60% of the country’s drinking water needs, as part of a new national water security strategy adapted to climate change. Minister of Equipment, Water and Forests Nizar Baraka announced the targets on Monday during an oral question session at the House of Representatives, where he outlined measures to strengthen water supplies and prevent flood risks. Baraka said the new strategy responds to major climate changes, including prolonged drought, floods, rising temperatures, and irregular rainfall. He noted that 53% of Morocco’s rainfall falls across just 7% of the country’s territory, creating challenges for the distribution of water resources. The strategy also addresses regional inequalities in water availability and the overexploitation of groundwater in several areas. Morocco plans to increase its water storage capacity through the construction of large and medium-sized dams. Baraka said work continues on 17 large dams with a combined storage capacity of 5.4 billion cubic meters. Authorities are also building six medium-sized dams and have scheduled three others. The ministry has also launched 12 new dam projects that will add an estimated 4.9 billion cubic meters in storage...
