Found this neat eroding #DesertStream bank with alternating layers of gravel and fine sediment. Spent a while daydreaming about the path of this meandering #river across the valley bottom, with gravels indicating riffles and the fine sediments showing the historic floodplain. 🧪 #FluvialGeomorphology
View of a vertical river cut bank in the desert. A pool of water is visible in the foreground and the ephemeral channel is indicated by a gravel bed. The cut bank also has a large cottonwood growing from it with exposed roots. In the bank, alternating layers of gravel and fine sediment can be seen, indicating where the channel and flood plains we're located historically within the river valley. Detail view of the cut bank showing layers of gravel separated by extremely fine sediment. Gravels indicate where the channel bed and riffle habitats were historically. The layers of fine sediment indicate the historic flood plain. Another detail of the cut bank showing a thick layer of gravel near the bottom and successive gravel layers of variable thickness moving up, separated by layers of extremely fine sediment. One final detail shot showing successive layers of gravel and fine sediment in a desert river cut bank.
