performances are a big part of it too—neither main character is particularly well-written, but Chiwetel Ejiofor gives an unlikeable prick a kind of wounded, righteous dignity that makes him compelling, and Renate Reinsve does a great reserved-but-increasingly-desperate face.
watching BACKROOMS again tonight. curious how it will hold up for me. it’s very much a vibe movie—the specific emotional triggers it hits (alienation, childhood abuse leading to hard to escape patterns, the increasingly banal anonymity of public spaces) really land for me.

I struggle to see this as anything more, or more threatening, than desperate flailing. But perhaps I underestimate the degree to which Israel is 'competitive authoritarian'.
In the meantime, Likud is still at the Big Lie. After the head of CEC, AG and Shin Bet Chief announced yesterday that even if there were irregularities they won’t affect final outcome, Likud demanded the CEC presidency be convened to discuss the supposed Arab tampering. CEC rejected the demand.

Luckily I saw the ad that has brought this up. I can't remember what state but some losing GOP guy is desperate enough that he is now making ads about legalizing Zyn vaping juice or whatever the product is considered. But it's a brand of vape product.
