closing the strait of hormuz is kinda a "welps that was a mess, we got it reopened (dragged out that wreckage...), stuff is moving again" problem.
abqaiq is a facility in saudi that ~85% of their oil has to pass through. it's a complex desulfurization plant. How long would it take to rebuild that.

people think iran closing the strait is their main threat but it's actually flattening the facilities at abqaiq

Listening back to speeches by Bush Sr from June 1989 and Bush Jr from June 2001, they sound remarkably clear and coherent, compared to the current president of United States (and compared to the previous one..)

We’ve done a great job of reducing some air pollutants since the dirty 1970s. The modern environmental movement and regulations did that.👍
But if we don’t also reduce GHG emissions at the same time we’re setting ourselves up for unprecedented rates of global warming. 👎

A coal fired power plant burns 90-150 truckloads of coal per day. But the fly ash is a raw material for high-strength cement, cutting CO2 emissions of that industry, and desulfurization to prevent acid rain produces gypsum for making drywall.

These fools have no idea what Iran can do to them. If they hit their oil and gas separation plants, their desulfurization plants, and their desalination plants, it's literally over for them, not just economically but as a nation.

The most effective attack on an 🇷🇺 oil refinery is when it targets gasoline reforming.
This will stop the production of gasoline and the production of hydrogen, a by-product needed for diesel desulfurization and hydrocracking.

I don’t remember the name or country though.
Do you know if that’s been attacked yet?

TIL that many drywall plants are colocated with coal power plants and use the waste from flue gas desulfurization as their source of gypsum.
Fascinating.
Will there be a meaningful increase in the price of drywall as coal power plants close and they have to source naturally occurring gypsum?

Yeah, it's funny how "byproducts" are often critical products in and of themselves. For example, most of our sulfuric acid, the world's most important industrial acid, is a byproduct of oil desulfurization. As we switch off oil, sulfur and sulfuric acid will become more expensive.
