I’m ending a shitty work week by getting back on the marathon training wagon. My watch was telling me I was ‘detraining’ so I got out and ran the fastest 11km that I’ve ever ran.

‘ave it!

I'm still pretty slow at the moment but at least it's due to detraining as opposed to having very little oxygen-carrying capacity 😆

This is called “detraining”. It is a known phenomenon in the literature when experts, like radiologists, rely on AI tools. They become less competent at their jobs even though they are supposed to be “supervising” the AI.

Its a reverse centaur shitshow.

Our study in @jphysiol.bsky.social is now open access! With the design of training, detraining & retraining we report:

1) Reproducible changes in muscle proteome
2) Several proteins remain elevated after detraining --> potential muscle memory at the protein level!

Human skeletal muscle possesses both reversible proteomic signatures and a retained proteomic memory after repeated resistance training
Abstract figure legend Human skeletal muscle proteome response was investigated after 10-week resistance training (RT1) followed by 10-week training cessation (i.e. detraining, DT), and finally, 10-w...

It's time to get back on the trails after two weeks off from any rigorous training. Ideally, this is the last time the Outsiders app has me rated as "detraining" until the taper in May!

In the last week I've increased my training volume - I've done three strength and conditioning classes including a 1.5 hour lower body workout last night, a day of skiing, and a long skate on the canal and I'm still 'Detraining'?! OH COME ON.

I think that the culture of optimisation, hustle, or just general "goal oriented value extraction" is another cause of this inability to read for context.

A lot of people are essentially detraining curiosity because of a focus on "getting to point A", so tasks where one must reveal and synthesise

40% of two-year-olds now have their own tablet.

That’s a problem.

Just ask elementary school teachers. Behavior issues are through the roof. And devices are a major reason.

Why?

We’re training kids to soothe via devices.

We are detraining their ability to cope and handle emotions.

A shocking amount of detraining occurred in the 4 week break I took.

Vo2 dropped by 5%
Average bpm for a given pace up by 8

Bitter pill to swallow

Bio mechanical still strong so body wants to run instinctive paces

This should have been a mid tempo run but ended up threshold

Got a new Garmin and it's "recovery time" function was all cute and fun while it said "resting". Woke up this morning and it told me I'm "detraining". Bitch I've been busy!

Overhead press, in *everyone*, is the first lift to suffer from detraining, the hardest lift to recover former strength on, the slowest to progress.

This is because it uses tiny muscles compared to literally any in the posterior chain.

Understanding detraining and retraining effects, and why it's a lot easier to take time off of exercise without losing your gains, than you might think.

Detraining, Retraining, And Not Sitting Still
Taking a break or having to ease up on your training doesn’t mean that you’ll immediately lose all of the gains you’ve been making. It takes longer than we think to lose the strength, muscle, and endurance we’ve built. Even when do we lose some, it’s not as difficult as we think to get it back.
