🔥 My friends at DMNO have a new devtool: varlock.
It’s a drop-in replacement for dotenv, and adds a bunch of cool stuff like validation and type safety. It stores the secrets themselves in password managers or encrypted vaults.
The landing page also has a very cool RPG vibe 😄

My devtool officially launched to the larger team today 🥹 🎉 so happy to finally hand it off 🙌🏾
The internal devtool I'm building at the job has been so good it's caught 3 major bugs already and it hasn't even launched yet 🎉

I have mentioned my colleague who uses AI as a devtool but hates it when people use it to communicate with him. I get that. You think you're on friendly terms with someone, and then you find out that for some reason, communicating with you is a chore that they spend tokens to avoid.

Every once in a while I remember I co-founded a devtool startup in 2017 that was explicitly about integrating learning science into its design helping developers to productively offload (!) decision point documentation as they drafted code. We were TRULY just before the right time
It bothers me in part because the underlying technologies have the potential to actually create good conditions for learning through building. Platforms designed to enable people without coding skills built in good faith would use very different patterns.
