Most people didn’t even speak what we now know as standard italian, they spoke regional dialects (sicilian is strongly infulenced by Arabic, etc)

We jokingly asked our accents and dialects teacher in college what a “pirate accent” was. He answered very seriously, “Cornwall.”
The pirate accent is a West Country accent, but not all West Country accents are the pirate accent. Also, the pirate accent is greatly exaggerated.

It's legit underappreciated how many *barely* mutually intelligible dialects every large European country had before mass literacy plus centralization flattened almost all of it out.
Also, even the idea of a single national identity for most European countries is relatively new, despite the claim of these "ancient nations."
As of 1794, only 11% of people in France spoke French as a first language, and nearly half didn't speak French or spoke it poorly.

I met a Black single mom in Roxbury with a natural ear for languages of the kind I'd only read about in books. In addition to both local dialects of English she spoke all the local dialects of Spanish, Portuguese, and was learning Vietnamese and Chinese for fun.
