📜 #OTD in #History 25 June 1900, a cache of 50,000 manuscripts and silk paintings, which included the #DiamondSutra, the world's oldest surviving dated book (11 May 868 AD), were discovered by Daoist monk Wang Yuanlu in the Mogao Caves, China.

The earliest-known dated & printed book is the #DiamondSūtra, a #MahāyānaBuddhist found in 1900 by a #Daoist monk. It dates to #ThisDayInHistory in 868, in the #TangDynasty, and includes the earliest-known public-domain statement (i.e., created "for universal free distribution").

On this day in the year 868, the first book was published.
That sounds like hyperbole, but the first book was not 'The Epic of Gilgamesh.'

Though it was written almost 3,000 years before the first book, The Epic of Gilgamesh was carved into stone tablets. And the Gutenberg Bible was printed nearly 600 years after the Diamond Sutra. Both were printed using movable, block type – but Chinese printers were using this technology centuries before their European counterparts.

So, the honor of “first book” goes to the Diamond Sutra. It’s a compendium of Mahayana Buddhist scripture or teachings. The book’s text and imagery were first carved from wooden blocks, dipped in ink, then applied to parch- ment. The Diamond Sutra was put together in the form of a scroll. It also has an imprint that reads:
“Reverently made for universal free distribution by Wang Jie on behalf of his two parents on the 15th of the 4th moon of the 9th year of Xiantong.”
That was May 11, 868.
