There's an argument, but it's nore subtle. What prevents the emergence of a welfare state is the existence of a hated minority the majority wouldn't want to disproportionately benefit from it.

Ableism is about the only form of discrimination people are willing to accept. Australua passed disability dicrimination laws in 1994 but they are largely toothless, unlike the ADA in the US.

I would always refrain from *bans*, as they often lead to victimdom/martyrdom narratives, or veer into (often racist) dicrimination & persecution, but it’s high time we realize *all* religions need better guardrails & (when necessary:) consequences.
