"Polls are for dogs" — former Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker

I like that saying along with “Polls don’t vote”.

Attempting to channel Diefenbaker?

Exactly who in the US does he believe would pay attention?
October 12, 2026 at 2:16 PM
The liberals have had some real winners too but, the cons have elevated picking shite leaders to an art form.

Diefenbaker shot down the Arrow because Eisenhower told him too.

Stanfield couldn’t tie his own shoe laces without a focus group (remember the bananas?)

Mulroney was Reagan’s stooge.

Etc

Removing some rail from downtown: good idea.
Removing *all* the rail from downtown: stupid as hell.
Greber initiated it, but as with a lot of things, Diefenbaker delivered the coup de grace.
Converting the old railway right of way into the Queensway and destroying the downtown.

Bulldozing Lebreton Flats and then letting it sit fallow for decades.

Closing Union Station.

Demolishing buildings in the core with no plans to immediately redevelop, letting parking lots propagate instead.
What's your Ottawa related "Roman Empire"? What's a bit of Ottawa you think about like once a week?

Mines obviously going to be the 99 Rideau raccoon, or that one car everyone knows.

I wonder where that man and raccoon are today. I hope they're still friends.

I'll add that:

Harper, Trudeau and Carney belong in the Hague

As well as their cabinets

Canada could’ve been a leader in aerospace technology but John Diefenbaker was a wannabe American Conservative bootlicker.

Never again.

On Oct. 4, 1957, the Avro Arrow was unveiled with the intention of it being the RCAF's primary interceptor in the 1960s.
Less than two years later, the program was abruptly cancelled and 14,528 Avro employees were put out of work.
This is the story.

My dad was in the RCAF, in logistics, at the time. He thought the cancellation was a terrible decision, and he never wavered in that view. Largely for that reason, he considered Diefenbaker to be an awful Prime Minister (although he was a life-long Conservative).

As well, in 1957, the Progressive Conservatives under John Diefenbaker ended 22 years of Liberal rule. Dief made cutting federal spending a major priority and he was not a supporter of the Arrow program.

An important reminder that at one point Canada had an amazing aerospace industry with world-leading experts on the team. Then Diefenbaker decided to scrap it and put 14k people out of work in one day.

In fairness to Diefenbaker, the St. Laurent government was already reviewing the Arrow program.

It was extremely expensive, and the orders for planes weren't there.

Compare this approach to the approach of the 1860's & the 1960's. You'd never hear John A. Macdonald or John Diefenbaker using this kind of language.

This is what learning from your history looks like in practice. I want to see more of this in the world.

1958 is Diefenbaker, 1984 is Mulroney.

The TCPL mainline was completed exceptionally quickly, but the St. Laurent government had to force legislation through the house in 1956, which ultimatly led to it's defeat and the election of the Diefenbaker conservatives (ending 22 years of Liberal governance). The pipe was completed by 1958.

Funny but that’s not what someone thought about changing the name of Ryerson. He actually lived in a time when it was legal to own another human being, his thoughts and actions towards FN folks were entirely appropriate at the time. Pearson and PE Trudeau and Diefenbaker had no excuse.

John Diefenbaker challenged Canadians to look north.
Almost seven decades later, Canada may be awakening to his dream.

There have been some moments where Canada didn't consider things to be great (eg, Fenian invasions, McKinley tarrifs, Diefenbaker and JFK, invasion of Iraq, etc)
I don't think relations with Canada have ever been this poor since confederation.

Democratic electeds need to take this stuff way more seriously than they seem inclined to.

Absolutely true. Chrétien, Martin, Harper, Justin Trudeau, Carney are the only PMs without Residential Schools. They closed under Chrétien so he gets a pass.
We also named airports after Cons like Diefenbaker and Stanfield….
