Airplanes don't actually fly, they just exploit pressure differentials across a cambered surface to generate lift exceeding their weight.

if you can’t use language to reflect very straightforward power differentials then maybe you shouldn’t be in the language business.

The only really awesome thing about the NBA Cup is that point differentials matter.
I want blood.
So much blood.

how do you implement this equitably without also factoring in power differentials?

and if you are factoring in power differentials, how are you doing that programmatically/at scale?

if you’re *not* factoring in power differentials, rather than counterbalancing bias, this perpetuates it.

It's pretty simple: Cities that want more people to bike shouldn't force cyclists to ride alongside fast cars.

"Substantial speed differentials between bikes and motor vehicles are a barrier to bike riding."

bsky.app/profile/mrbu... special elections and absolutely jaw dropping primary turnout differentials
If every special election is a data point, I'm placing my bet on the latter

It's not weird to think about how the relative experiences of jiggle physics works at extreme scale differentials, it's extremely normal!
And cool!
Just ask @tropicalsleet.bsky.social! He's the expert!

like this is also a dynamic that shows up in the workplace - it’s a function of power differentials

I personally think that freedom of speech does not actually exist as a concept. Or at least, freedom of speech cannot actually exist except in a completely equitable and egalitarian society.

So long as power differentials exist, the more powerful has the ability to silence the less.

Globus was a small rotating globe, approximately five inches wide, displaying the spacecraft's current and projected position above Earth. Instead of digital systems, it operated through a complex network of gears, cams, and mechanical differentials that converted orbital data into globe motion.

the special elections and primary turnout differentials are leaning heavily toward the latter. and primary turnout differentials seem far more predictive than special election results, though those are a valid data point.

I think the point about power differentials cannot be emphasized enough.
I am brooding over how big a red flag it is for an artist or writer to single out anyone who comes to a reading or a book signing and begin DMing them personally/inviting them out after the fan expresses adoration for their work. The power differential is SO big, and the potential for abuse extreme.
aaaaand like going beyond "Neil Gaiman has committed sexual assault and child abuse", there's a serious problem of powerful people exploiting fans & the systems enabling that shit....
