Eritrea has severed diplomatic relations with Ethiopia after Addis Ababa ordered the closure of Ethiopia’s embassy in Asmara and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats persona non grata, according to Reuters. The decision marks a sharp deterioration in relations between the neighboring countries, which have a long history of conflict and political tension. The diplomatic rupture came after explosions were reportedly heard overnight in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, according to diplomatic sources cited in the report. The available information does not establish whether the explosions were connected to the diplomatic dispute or identify their cause. Authorities had not publicly provided a detailed explanation of the blasts at the time of the report. Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a devastating border war from 1998 to 2000, and their relationship remained hostile for years afterward. A 2018 peace agreement temporarily improved ties, but relations have since deteriorated again amid disputes involving regional security, border areas, and the conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. The closure of the embassy and the expulsion of diplomats represent a significant escalation because diplomatic missions are normally maintained even during periods of severe disagreement. The move could make communication between the two governments more difficult and increase uncertainty across the Horn of Africa, a region already affected by political instability and armed conflicts. The Reuters report provides only limited information about Eritrea’s formal response and the broader consequences of the decision. Further statements from both governments will be needed to clarify the reasons for the break in relations and whether additional diplomatic or security measures will follow.
