A great many Drosophila immigrans on my compost heap, confirmed by the spines on the front femur.
But also lots of this darker Drosophilid which I can't identify, having failed with the key.

Xanthandrus comtus is a migratory hoverfly, and there have been several UK records this week, ranging from the Isle of Wight to Edinburgh.
I was pleased to spot a female of this erratic immigrant in my S. Cambridgeshire garden today.

Thanks! I suppose the family has never been covered in a RES Handbook? (www.royensoc.co.uk/publications...). Incidentally, I came across a PDF of d'Assis Fonseca’s old key from 1965, which must of course be significantly outdated.
