Genuinely fascinating that the only supermarkets paying all their staff above the London Living Wage are the German discounters.

Aurora stores are a multi-market chain in Ukraine. These stores are essentially discounters or 'dollar stores,' specializing in affordable, everyday consumer products. The are usually packed.

If you're not getting clubcard discounts in Tesco you're generally getting rinsed versus the discounters.

One thing for sure I've noticed is the death of discounters in the US, Aldi and Lidl are moving in but still.
the UK does *way* better on this than the US, out of a combination of urbanization, monopolization, and the big stores using a model of smaller stores for urban areas (tesco's metro, sainsbury's central, etc)
if you agree having a nearby grocery store is an essential amenity, state intervention (either heavy handed regulation or direct provision) are the only ways to guarantee access to one in poor and especially in rural areas

My buddy and I were hiking deep in the Glacier NP backcountry when we heard voices coming ahead — kids voices. And they were singing “Have a good nights sleep on us… MATTRESS DISCOUNTERS.”

And lo it was my local state rep Spencer Black and kids.
It's easy to underestimate the power of a simple song. But we moved from Indiana to Wisconsin four years ago, and my kids (12 and 9) still sing the IU Credit Union jingle they used to hear on the car radio. If name recognition is half the battle in politics, why not use it there, too?
. @tavernresearch.bsky.social is trying to make political jingles a thing again.

And maybe? It's a bop

Discount grocer Aldi plans to open more than 180 stores in U.S. this year as customers across incomes seek value
Aldi's growth reflects the fiercer competition with traditional players as discounters lure away shoppers and win more of their weekly grocery runs.

Discounters have managed to adapt themselves to this trend. High quality products have started appearing in hard discounters and are there at the lowest price point possible on the market.

Over the last 5 years the share of discounters on the Russian market more than doubled to reach 6%. This is due to Russian becoming more sensitive to prices and more likely to chose discounters or compact convenience stores.

Germans love their discounters. And the rest of the world seems to as well.

That is, if you’re buying from them and not selling to them.
German discounters crush fresh produce prices — and suppliers too
Banana exporters from Ecuador describe a recent Lidl offer as the “straw that broke the camel’s back.”
