Can someone play this for @andyburnham.bsky.social because I'm not sure he's taking the issue as seriously as he should.

The coals inside #disposableBBQs are separated from the surface by only a thin aluminium tray that becomes extremely hot... Even after charcoal appears extinguished, #BBQ trays can stay hot for hours .. barbecues discarded before cooling have started bin #fires.

Do it. And not just a "temporary prohibition". There is no safe way to use or dispose of them.

The fire service said the cause was not known but a number of discarded #disposableBBQs, which are banned in the New Forest, were found throughout the area.

God knows what the damage will be by the end of this weekend.

Just ban them.

Sainsbury's, Cambridge city centre yesterday.

Voluntary retail agreement says: "Retailers will remove disposable BBQs from sale once an extreme heat event has been declared as imminent."

It's been the hottest late May Bank Holiday ever, with warnings issued.

Are they still on sale where you are?

Does anybody know where to find the pledge (or whatever it was) Asda & Sainsbury's gave to withdraw #disposableBBQs during heatwaves? I thought of quoting it & sending together with current pics to their PR people.

I've found news stories about the voluntary ban in 2022. Is it on corporate sites?

Asda has stacks of 1000s of disposable barbecues for people to take into our visibly parched countryside, after 2 months of drought.

Wasn't there talk of banning them?

(13 mm of rain combined for April & May locally. 30 year average to 2020 was around 40 mm for each month.)

I know you worked incredibly hard on this Vikki and sadly I’m not remotely surprised the Government refused. I’d genuinely be interested to see the rationale though.

It’s partly why I’m increasingly interested in the safety/environmental standards route instead.
Mags, that’s what I have been saying … I lobbied for a ban. Govt refused so I am trying to get local stores to refuse to sell them. There isn’t much more I can do if Govt won’t stop them

Exactly this... choose better

#Disposablebbqs
Portable bbq. Monitored during use and cooling and remnants disposed of. Cost about 20 euros. Same price as four disposables. It's light and takes up hardly any room. As well as being better for the environment it's a better choice financially. No brainer.

And that’s the bit that keeps getting danced around politically I think.

The reluctance to openly say:
“This product probably causes enough harm overall that it shouldn’t really exist anymore.”
It’s not those coming for the day - our biggest issue is sadly local people who use whatever means to light fires. This is too much of a gift to them. Those living near the heaths want this banned

If it genuinely posed enough risk to justify emergency withdrawal during drought/fire alerts… why are they normal stock the rest of the time?

Fair play to Aldi, Waitrose & Southern Co-op at least for binning them entirely. #DisposableBBQs
