#Division4ProgRock. No. 5. Druid. Mid-70s prog band, reminiscent of Yes, two pretty good albums. Driummer Cedric Sharpley went on to play with Tubeway Army. Listen to 'Toward The Sun' (1975).

#Division4ProgRock. No. 10. Gnidrolog. Released two startling albums in 1972. Classical and folk influences, intriguing time signature games and counterpoint. The music is dark and intense. the reunion album from 2000 does not disappoint. Listen to 'Lady Lake' (1972)

That's the end of #Division4ProgRock. Here are the twenty bands I chose, there were loads more that I could have delved into, I hope you found something of interest there. Tomorrow something new...

#20FaveLiveRecordings No. 1. Badger: One Live Badger: 1973. I'm posting these in alphabetical order, hence this one again, which came up recently in #Division4progrock. I'm only posting one a day so come back tomorrow for number 2.

The #Division4ProgRock series will conclude tomorrow with the final three selections, I hope you've enjoyed it. Meanwhile I'm already compiling another list to work through...

#Division4ProgRock. No. 2. Comus. Folk/Prog band with Eastern influences, the material is pretty dark and intense. Made two albums early 70's and the inevitable reunion album in 2012. There is a two disc anthology that is well worth the money, recommended listen 'First Utterance'.

#Division4ProgRock. No. 9. Badger. Tony Kaye's band after he left/got kicked out of Yes. Made one absolutely stunning live album and then one studio album that is bloody terrible. Listen to 'One Live Badger' (1973).

#Division4ProgRock. No. 11. National Health: Two from the Canterbury scene now. As was often the case National Health's members had been part of numerous Canterbury bands and the line-up was pretty fluid! Stellar jazz-fusion musicianship as you would expect. Listen to 'Of Queues And Cures (1978)

#Division4ProgRock. No. 18: Paladin: Early 70s British band from the heavy end of prog. Recorded two albums on the Bronze label before going their separate ways. The members of the band went on to work with a number of other artists, they never reformed to my knowledge. Listen to 'Charge' (1972)

#Division4ProgRock. No. 11. Gilgamesh. Closely related, in that incestuous Canterbury way, to National Health. Alan Gowen's Gilgamesh made two great albums of heavily jazz-centred prog fusion. A third surfaced in 2000 as a mop up compilation. Listen to 'Gilgamesh' (1975).

Starting my #Division4ProgRock list today. The bands are not in Division 4 for musical quality or creativity, some of them are excellent, it's more about success or obscurity. Anyone is up for promotion to Division 3 or relegation to whatever is below Division 4...

I was on the verge of putting Greenslade in the #Division4ProgRock list, but on reflection I think they are somewhere near the head of Division Three, looking for promotion...

Joining in with the #division4progrock debate from @closetotheedge.bsky.social with this one. Hannibal were based in Birmingham and would slot in with the likes of Colosseum. This was their only LP released in 1970

#Division4ProgRock. No. 1. Aardvark. A band that apparently featured Paul Kossoff and Simon Kirke at the beginning, but by the time they released their one and only album (1970) the lads had moved ion to bigger things. Psychedelic photo-prog, no guitar. Worth a listen, remaster available.
August 15, 2024 at 7:59 AM
#Division4ProgRock. No. 17. Quatermass: At the heavier end of prog, Quatermass released their outstanding album in 1970. Featuring John Gustaffson (Merseybeats, Roxy, Gillan, etc) and Mick Underwood (Episode Six, Gillan, etc) alongside J. Peter Robinson on keys. Listen to 'Quatermass' (1970).

More #Division4ProgRock later, I've got to stain the shed this morning, I've been putting it off but I can't procrastinate any longer.... or can I? I'll have to take all the signage down first.

#Division4ProgRock . No. 8. Cressida. Another creative band that burned out two soon, just two great albums out there. @noiseresearch.bsky.social also posted these today. There is a catch-all anthology available which is well worth picking up. Listen to 'Asylum' (1971).
August 17, 2024 at 2:10 PM
#Division4ProgRock. No. 7. Gracious! Another mellotron heavy band that released two great albums but never quite found success, but the time the second album was released they had already split. A brief reunion in the 90s spawned a third album. Listen to 'This Is....' (1971)

#NowPlaying Frame - Frame (Bacillus, 1972) German bluesy prog rock produced by Dieter Dierks (Nektar) Maybe one for @closetotheedge.bsky.social and his #division4progrock list? #progrock #prog

#Division4ProgRock. No. 3. Bröselmaschine. German folk prog band, active on and off since about 1968. Quite a few albums out there, my son bought me a box set a couple of years ago. recommended listen, self-titled debut album (1970)..... and you thought I was only going to do British bands...

#Division4ProgRock. No. 4: England: Mellotron heavy symphonic/pastoral #ProgRock. Made one epic album, but sadly came along a bit too late for prog. CD reissue is worth getting with a bonus disc. There are a couple of later albums out there but I haven't heard them. Listen to 'Garden Shed'
