I don't like how Linux handles Discord because of the weird auto-updater thing. Installing it through flatpak helps circumvent this issue, but if you use i3, dmenu will only recognize the original flatpak install. If you change the name of the fp install, dmenu refuses to recognize that name.

I love Rofi and by extension #linux because we don't have start menus. We have runners. Which are even more low-level and simple than windows start menus. It only parses the locations you configure it to, and it ONLY shows installed packages in dmenu mode

last night I installed RebornOS on my laptop using the i3 tiling windows manager, replaced dmenu with rofi, figured out why the brightness and volume keys weren't working and fixed them, replaced i3bar with polybar and skinned polybar with catppuccin. this is the sick shit I don't usually post

First dead simple, ~100loc, LLM interface is getting input and piping outputs to dmenu. Selections get copied to the clipboard to be used elsewhere.

currently wasting time trying to write a set of scripts for fuzzel/dmenu eg. emoji pickers, network management, calculators, in nu instead of bash

Okay "all" is a stretch but dmenu was very popular and it took me WAAAY too long to figure out what to replace it with.

was dissatisfied with dmenu and existing alternatives, so i went ahead and wrote my own.
main improvements are hiding the window and suspending instead of closing fully, to minimize startup time, and also better handling of when programs are installed/uninstalled.

the menu system is kinda cool as a proof of concept for what you can do with a handful of boilerplate bash functions and a dmenu picker but i haven't actually used it myself lol

It taught me how to solve my own problems at least, kids never have to encounter that kind of friction with technology now. I ran crunchbang for a good while, the combo of openbox, tint2, and dmenu was so nice.

my dmenu emoji picker has been so useful man i can just hit a few keys and boom. lightweight emoji picker menu that i can type through. it's beautiful

dmenu is quite minimal, usually i want stuff like fuzzy search and .desktop support (not that i couldn't add that to wmenu myself)

I'm not sure what you're looking for in terms of dmenu impls if wmenu doesn't fit your needs

@moedra.bsky.social and I were trying to figure out why dmenu was being so stubborn. Renaming the fp install to 'discord' works just fine if you run discord through the terminal. But I discovered that despite the rename, dmenu will only acknowledge the original name for some weird reason...

i was using the whole kit and caboodle at one point. i have no idea how. literally dmenu is the only decent piece of software from suckless
