BadSuccessor is a new AD attack primitive that abuses dMSAs, allowing an attacker who can modify or create a dMSA to escalate privileges and take over the forest.

Migration from Traditional Service Accounts: dMSAs can replace existing standard service accounts. During migration, dMSAs automatically learn the devices on which the service account is used, making the transition smoother.

Credential Guard Integration: dMSAs can leverage Credential Guard to enhance security further. Credential Guard helps protect the secrets used by dMSAs by binding them to the machine account credential and periodically updating them.

While RIVUR wasn't powered to answer these questions, it's important to note that we didn't see an association between DMSAs and GFR change either. DMSA may not be the best marker in this population and kidney function change (eGFR) may be a better (and more proximate!) assessor of damage.

BadSuccesor Attack: Mitigating Active Directory Privilege Escalation via dMSA Abuse
The BadSuccesor attack, discovered by Yuval Gordon, exploits Delegated Managed Service Accounts (dMSAs) in Active Directory (AD) environments. Attackers abuse Organizational Unit (OU) permissions delegated to non-Tier Zero accounts to create or modify dMSAs, leading to forest takeover. Key Risks: Non-Tier Zero accounts with OU delegation can create malicious dMSAs. Attackers manipulate `msDS-AccountPrecededByLink` to escalate privileges. Implicit Owner Rights on dMSA objects can be abused.

Delegated Permissions: dMSAs allow specific permissions to be delegated to access resources in the domain. This reduces security risks and provides better visibility and logs of service account activity in Windows Server.

Automatic Password Management: Like gMSAs, dMSAs do not require manual password management. AD automatically handles password rotation, reducing the risk of unauthorized access and improving overall security in Windows Server.

Delegated Permissions: dMSAs allow specific permissions to be delegated to access resources in the domain. This reduces security risks and provides better visibility and logs of service account activity in Windows Server.

Here are some key points about dMSA:

Enhanced Security: dMSAs provide better security by using machine-bound credentials. This means only specified machine identities mapped in Active Directory (AD) can access the account. This helps prevent credential harvesting attacks, such as kerberoasting.
