It's wild that state DMVs are banning miniature kei cars for being dangerous, but happily registering gargantuan F-250 pickups.

your information is automatically sent to election officials you’re registered unless you opt out. DMVs already verify citizenship when issuing IDs. It’s not a radical idea. It’s a proven system that removes the burden from citizens and puts it where it belongs on the government.

So apparently anyone with a license plate number can submit it to most DMVs to obtain detailed owner information, provided they claim they’re doing so in the “ordinary course of business” (eg to collect a debt). This isn’t verified or checked.

Fun fact: Growing up I thought DMVs were a made up thing for jokes about stuff taking too long cause I grew up in Michigan, and Michigan doesn't have DMVs, all the car stuff is done at the Secretary of State office so I just assumed DMVs were just a plot contrivance

DMVs have a bad reputation, but everybody I just met was nice and downright patient with me. Seems like a draining job, so the kindness means even more.

being a nondriver gives you an outsider view in American society, and one thing you notice is that we’ve made the very odd and not great decision to outsource our de facto national ID to state DMVs
Democrats should get behind a voter ID law that only goes into effect when 99.9% of the eligible population has a valid ID and automatically pauses when the number falls below that. The fact that Republicans would never accept this would make clear what the real point of voter ID laws is.

Several DMVs have banned kei car registrations, deeming them “unsafe.”

Little known fact on Birth citizenship when the US tried this B.S. in the past Massachusetts issued its own passports. I don't want to get all sovereign citizen on y'all, but read the last sentence of 14th Am. "and of the State wherein they reside." DMVs it's time to issue passports like it's 1858
