Absolutely true. That dogsledder and her rabid fans.

When you can't just come out and say to the random dogsledder you found online in 2017 "hey so you changed my entire life for the better and altered its course to go wildly in a direction I couldn't have ever predicted, and I will never be the same person again" so you just say "thanks i guess"
It's hard to think about retiring from racing, because mushing is, and will always be, a huge part of my life. So I took a journey with my older dogs, who have retired themselves. They've taught me so much over the years; now, they're teaching me to live with change.

Time to belt out my praise song for this new podcast, "What To Carry, What to Burn," by @blairbraverman.bsky.social, author of a brilliant reported memoir, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube, and a great novel, Small Game. 1/ shows.acast.com/what-to-carr...

After 8 years, my column Tough Love is ending (or at least morphing into something non-advicey). It’s been an utter privilege. Thank you so much to everyone who’s read, commented, and written in.

I wrote about what I learned from almost a decade of questions. ❤️ www.outsideonline.com/culture/love...

I just started listening to this podcast about survival and it’s such beautiful counterprogramming to the pall of AI doomerism. Human resilience and creativity and solidarity and ingenuity and care! Really recommend if you need your cup filled.

"Love is a survival skill," concludes Blair. "Not just for the person being loved, but for the person doing the loving." I listened because Blair's an old friend. Historic survival stories? I didn't think they were my thing. But she tells them so well they are now. shows.acast.com/what-to-carr...

I listen to a bunch intermittently but my current rec is What To Carry, What To Burn. It's true survival stories told by dogsledder Blair Braverman, who is just such an incredible storyteller and so good at humanising everyone involved

the difference btw namjin and hopekook are mostly aesthetic

former a dogsledder who is trying to dogsled with a golden retriever (100% for the funny video. the golden still gets treats!)

latter a tireless husky and a not-a-nature-person who happens to be VERY talented at dogsled training
namjin and hopekook are 2 btships with a deeply domestic vibe

not in a “partners for life!” way,

but in a “oh they’re makings of a Family Unit” kinda way,
“oh that white picket fence is made up of reinforced steel sharpened to a diamond point” kinda way

I'd be singing the praises of What to Carry, What to Burn even if @blairbraverman.bsky.social wasn't a friend & fellow traveler. It's thrilling, moving, surprising--and of interest to me as a writer, a study in adaptation, knitting sources together into a new tale. podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/w...

One more thing on What to Carry, What to Burn: Podcasting's devolution into chat /true crime has depressed me as listener & writer. It's labeled--wrongly--as latter, & at first seems to be @blairbraverman.bsky.social "just" talking. But it's so arfully structured! podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/w...

Survival stories aren't my normal interest. Nor is the style, colloquial storytelling. & yet @blairbraverman.bsky.social's What to Carry, What to Burn, has enthralled me in both regards. Survival set free from bro adventurism; storytelling as brilliant structure. podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/w...

Yet another great episode of What to Carry, What to Burn from @blairbraverman.bsky.social! The moral of this story is that in a world of captains and first mates, not to mention a cannibalistic shipmate or two, be a Bob. Always be a Bob.
