Sawfly season kicks off with Dolerus anthracinus and Claremontia brevicornis...species of chalk grassland found on the Yorkshire Wolds today. Very few county records for either, as they fly so early in the year, before most folk are out looking in their habitat. #symphyta #ento #yorkshiresawflies

I find sawflies quite a satisfying group of insects. I quite like the black, or black and red, genus Dolerus which usually need to be dissected to identify. I found this one near Bintree Mill on Wednesday and it proved to be Dolerus germanicus, my 8th species of Dolerus. Lots more to find still!

This parasitic wasp emerged yesterday from an overwintered Dolerus larva. IDed as probable Tryphon sp. by Max Parkhomenko on iNat.

2026 Sawfly season started for me today with 2 Sooty Grievers (Dolerus anthracinus) at Millington Pastures VC61. Associated with quality chalk grassland here and flies (very) early, so is it really as uncommon as 2 records in last 50 years suggests? @ynuorg.bsky.social #yorkshiresawflies #symphyta

Another interesting insect from Potteric Carr, this time a sawfly. I think possibly Dolerus triplicatus, but I need to check. Swept from amongst rushes.
Although not having the 'wasp waist' of bees, ants and wasps, they are closely related to these groups.

Another interesting insect from Potteric Carr, this time a sawfly. I think possibly Dolerus triplicatus, but I need to check. Swept from amongst rushes.
Although not having the 'wasp waist' of bees, ants and wasps, they are closely related to these groups.
