Karasu contemplates what brings him joy in life. Things like stalking Oboro for personal entertainment.

Back in their youth, before the Garlean invasion made Karasu a begrudging tool of the Garleans and Oboro the avenging kami nobody wanted in the first place, their masters would assign the young shinobi little games to hone their skills. Karasu's favorite was the hunting game. One trainee would stalk another, following them from the shadows as they journeyed across a certain distance. The hider was to stay hidden at all costs, while the follower was to do anything in their power to either throw them off the scent or find and attack them directly. Being the hunter gave Karasu the thrill of power. He'd watch his prey chew their lips as their eyes scanned the treetops, breath quickening at every little motion. The fun of it, as they stalked towards an innocent bush with blade drawn as Karasu lay undiscovered in a ditch on the opposite side of the road. Not laughing was the hardest part of being a hunter, he felt. But being hunted, that also had its pleasures. You knew every eye was on you, that no matter what silly things you did or said someone hiding in the shadows would be moving to your will. When Oboro was his stalker Karasu would deliberately take the long way around, dragging Oboro through muddy ponds, refuse heaps, trees infested with angry magpies guarding their nests. With time trickling away for Karasu to succeed, he'd still draw the game out, extending his own pleasure until the final moment. But Master Gekkai was always watching, concealed even better than his own recruits could manage, and laughter was always punished with a sharp crack of his hand. Kami forfend you enjoy your work. Even beneath the Garlean boot, Karasu kept that joy alive in his heart. Master Gekkai would have killed any living thing he tried to keep as a companion, the better to assert dominance over him. Instead, Karasu created Mysidian Rabbits from his own mudra to tend as if they were pets, knowing their ephemeral nature would keep them safe. When he carried out his assassinations and espionage, Karasu took joy in his own power, in the way others feared him, in the names they called him behind his back. His comrades eventually saw him as half-mad, an allegation Karasu took delight in encouraging. Even if they feared him, they were at least watching him. And now Gekkai was gone, and so were those who'd joylessly attended him. His days as a feared assassin were over and good riddance to them, but from where could he pull his joy? The only audience left was Oboro and his comrades. Oboro, who had that spark of passion in him that had long become dull in the shinobi who worked under Master Gekkai. How ironic, that the moon's dim shadow was such a brightly burning star. Karasu found himself chasing that light, chasing its warmth. Whenever Oboro seemed to lose interest Karasu would drop another hint to his location, offer another bit of humilation and provocation. That beautiful bright star would flare again and yet again Karasu would have the joy of the chase. So far, little pricks to his ego were enough to keep the hunt going. Oboro's drive was as resiliant as Karasu's. But Karasu kept his knives sharp for the day that Oboro might require more extreme provocation…for without the hunt, without the spotlight, Karasu would have nothing left.
