My son turned 17 and we celebrated by bringing a bunch of his favorite musicians to the house and playing (mostly) his choices. Fortunately he loves what we play.

I creeped into the bedroom to get my bodhran out, lined it up next to my doumbek, and I was about to test what I thought I was hearing to prove to myself it was real, and then remembered it's 1130pm and my family is sleeping.

Doumbek drums and sitar, but they're very clearly porn music.

Doumbek drums and sitar, but they're very clearly porn music.
And the drums! Someone got them to sound like the heartbeat of a man slowly dying while the song speeds up around him.
I'm pretty sure the main beat was a bodhran, which fits the music but is odd if you're not used to it.
But I also thought I heard a doumbek?!?

The little drummer boy would not have played a marching snare with sticks. He probably would have played some sort of hand percussion like a doumbek or a paf, for example. If played gently, the drum would sound like a heartbeat or wind blowing across sand and grass, which would soothe a baby.

They definitely had a Doumbek on set; they have several African traditional dancers/musicians in a scene just before this.

So when they started following him like that was when I first picked up the doumbek sound.
It made me think of zombies, but in like the older fireside stories, where they are following the will of someone else who made them like that. Or like Bela Lugosi's Dracula hypnotizing people.
Both?

I maintain that the only truly cool drums are the doumbek, bodhran and an overturned 5-gallon bucket.

#NowSpinning a desert island album for me.
This is a Steve Wilson mix. While I find the mix fascinating, especially in raised prominence of Jamie Muir's little shaky things, I don't prefer it over the OG mix. That said, a brilliant pressing.
