Today, the legendary JR begins her last journey to the shipwrecking yard.
Home to many of us, she helped to understand plate tectonics, climate, deep biosphere, earthquakes/volcanoes, and was an integral part in international science and collaboration 🫡

Correct. Though it was also converted to a conventional drillship for offshore oil and gas exploration and was operated by Transocean until 2015.

i actually learned something from the replies that i think people were assuming i knew. glomar isn't a case, it's a reference to the first (or at least best-known invocation of "can not confirm or deny" and referred not to a case but a drillship involved in a wild CIA project.

scene from early October of 2023 while aboard the JOIDES Resolution drillship in northern Baffin Bay (IODP Exp 400) — part of my routine was to go outside on the deck with my morning coffee (usually at ~10:45-11am, before my shift started at noon)

The article made the cover of GRL, celebrating the now-retired JOIDES Resolution. Floating in the pitch-black Aegean Sea, the JR was an island of light and color.

Now in situ for a month.

It got a visit from VIKING REACH in the last few days - maybe bringing some personnel & supplies.

I went back through AIS tracks and note KOMMANDOR IONA visited/surveyed same area twice, earlier this year.

ORCA is "Currently configured as a geotechnical drillship".

I mean, no. It can't. Not without a drillship (which there was no plan to replace). Much of marine geology is hobbled for 20+ yrs as long as we don't have the infrastructure to collect samples/data. This all happened a year before the current NSF disasters.

I'm in my 40s. I can't wait.
