Please can we call non-compliant electric cycles what they are 'illegal unregistered electric motorcycles' used as ebikes. There is no such thing as illegal ebikes as clearly defined by the EAPC regs.

there are many ebikes that....still require muscle power to operate. You just go farther.
People think getting an electric bike means you get less of a workout but they don't understand the Jevons paradox.
This is how I feel about my electric bike. I just biked from the Ferry building to the Sutro Baths with my 4 year old and my understanding of SF's layout has grown immensely.

We are understandably anxious that this is producing a general backlash against rental ebikes altogether, and we are defensive of them, because they are an essential lynchpin of modal shift. Accusing us of being snotty or not caring about pedestrians probably doesnt help!

No. The Beach Cities of LA County are extremely hilly. Arterials are graded for trucks, but the side streets we relegate kids to have multiple 16% grades. Ratio of bike mass:children's mass is larger than for adults. Now add school books, sports gear, musical instruments. Ebikes are child transport

I know posting even the mildest discomfort with any aspect of ebike use sets off fury in some users, & honestly you need to deal with your own emotions around that. Even the bike companies are asking for better regulation. If ebikes are used better it will make them more popular & widely accepted.

One thing I really like is when world class racers like Kasia Niewiadoma and Maghalie Rochette post videos of themselves running errands on ebikes. Hopefully that helps "normalize" them for some of the sport biker crowd.

ebikes are so fucking cool like i used to bike to school but kinda hated it cause id get extremely sweaty and vancouver has a bunch of big hills but i don't have to worry about either of those and i can still get a fair bit of a workout
