The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is conducting a clinical trial of Gilead Sciences' experimental drug obeldesivir to evaluate its effectiveness in preventing Ebola virus disease following exposure to the Bundibugyo virus. The trial, known as EBO-PEP, is being carried out in Ituri province, where an Ebola outbreak emerged in mid-May 2026. More than 250 individuals are currently participating in the study, with plans to enroll approximately 1,000 adults and children aged 12 and older. Participants must have had contact with someone who tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus within the past five days and must not yet show symptoms. The study is coordinated by the medical humanitarian organization ALIMA, in collaboration with the DRC's National Institute for Biomedical Research and the French organization ANRS. The trial follows a post-exposure prophylaxis approach, where the drug is administered soon after potential contact with an infected person but before symptoms appear. Half of the participants will receive obeldesivir, while the other half will receive a placebo. Participants are monitored daily for 21 days and contacted by phone on day 42 for follow-up. The trial includes healthcare workers and family members of patients who may have been exposed to the virus. According to the Associated Press, the Bundibugyo virus outbreak has resulted in at least 8,300 confirmed cases and 4,000 deaths across seven provinces in eastern DRC since the outbreak was declared in mid-May. While Ervebo vaccine is being used to vaccinate healthcare workers, its effectiveness against the Bundibugyo virus is still under study. If the obeldesivir trial proves successful, the drug could help break chains of transmission and provide a critical tool in controlling the outbreak. The DRC's National Institute for Biomedical Research and ANRS are key partners in this research effort, which aims to develop new interventions for emerging infectious diseases. The study represents a significant step in the global effort to combat Ebola outbreaks, particularly those caused by less common strains like the Bundibugyo virus, which currently lacks approved treatments or vaccines.
