Parity for children leaving residential care with children in foster care 🏠@ECLCM
March 18, 2025 at 4:07 PM
Every day for several years, @ResCareTo21 team with love and vision has invited MPs and others to put their support behind making sure all children in care are able to stay in their homes past 18. Please stand with them: #ECLCM
Every Child Leaving Care Matters (ECLCM)
On the 4th December, 2013, the government announced that children who were in foster care would be allowed and supported to remain with their foster carers until they were 21 years of age. There was much celebration amongst campaigners when the announcement was made. However, those celebrations did not extend to children and young people in children’s homes. Children in residential care are not included in this change even though arguably the residential sector cares for possibly the most...

As we await the 'Case for Change', we salute everyone at @ResCareTo21 who have been tirelessly and lovingly pushing for the equal treatment of young people (aged 18+) in foster & residential care for 7+ years.

Today's statement from Education Secretary at #coronavirusbriefing. Absolutely right response to current health crisis but, significantly, also (first?) official acknowledgement that young people can safely stay in children's homes beyond 18. #ECLCM @ResCareTo21

2014 legislation allows young people to stay in foster care until age 21. Young people living in residential care excluded. Now @educationgovuk is proposing to regularise accommodation *without care* for 16 and 17 year-olds. Please sign #ECLCM petition:

Then we will all keep on supporting #ECLCM to spread the shock and outrage until the discrimination is remedied. Stay strong ✊

How can it be right for children living in children's homes to be pushed out at 18, and younger, while those in foster care can stay until they're 21? Please sign this petition & RT; it will take minutes:

OK, just looked at IPSA rules for MPs costs. If the argument has been won that MPs need help from state to support their children to age 21, why are care experienced people still having to campaign to stop young people being kicked out of their children's homes aged 18? #ECLCM

Really excellent film Milo. @JackieLongc4 couldn't believe young people are being kicked out of their homes months before starting uni. Seems Minister agreed it's not acceptable. So let's have equal rights to staying put to 21 (at least) #ECLCM
