#ecomodernist
Oung going from neoliberal ecomodernist to pro-KMT + pro-unificiation this remains absolutely fascinating as a intellectual trajectory
dumb motherfuckers going after cha chaan teng food now

the thing about a lot of wonky yimby urbanist ecomodernist stuff is that it just works 🤷‍♀️

Incel slang is absolutely everywhere among centre-right X-addicted ecomodernist types right now, it's pretty wild what has happened to their brains after being pickled in Musk-juice for a few years
Once-credible (even if you're opposed to their tack) NGO posting about an amicus brief describing the opposition as "cope" is some of the strongest evidence to date that being online can medically cook your brain to hashbrowns

3. This is why the Bill Gates/Ecomodernist approach will never work. I define ecomodernism as using technology as a substitute for political and economic change. We need new technologies and their widespread application. But we *also* need bold policies to shut down the old technologies.

NEW: In this short piece (open access!) I describe how ecomodernist visions and "green growth" scenarios rely on fundamentally imperialist assumptions, and have no answer to this problem.

you don't have to be an eco-socialist to accept this. this was the ecomodernist green growth position! which apparently is still too radical for the "realists" of the UK

I’m on an ECOMODERNIST list???? LMAO

This paper shows how ecomodernist "green growth" visions for high-income economies rely on imperialist arrangements that constrain development in the global South. brill.com/view/journal...

the incoherence of the ecomodernist position is driving me absolutely crazy

Honestly there is a decent sub-section of the clean tech community, particularly the EVs / Solar / Batteries centre-right ecomodernist types, who will absolutely dive head first into this.

Not particularly huge numbers though, and I bet a good chunk of them are already secret Trump voters

not enough ecomodernist charlatans on this site for me to argue with unfortunately

Solutions described as “obvious,” “straightforward,” or “commonsense” are insulated from scrutiny and attempts to discuss land, minerals, biodiversity, or scale is treated as obstruction: The ecomodernist bully pulpit.

Ecomodernist masterpiece. Lady Eboshi represents the modernist thesis and Princess Mononoke represents the ecoprimitivist antithesis. At the end of the film the characters come to a new synthesis that endeavors to secure prosperity for people that does not come at the expense of the natural world.
Honestly also the moment she says she will show us how to kill a God and, like, I saw why those angels followed Satan

based on vibes alone, Fichte would've been an ecomodernist, Schelling a degrowth communist

And the neoclassical economist / ecomodernist idea that the fossil-fuel economy is what allows us to decouple ourselves from agriculture and ecosystems is the core of the elite climate denial that maintains the fossil-fuel status quo while acknowledging that climate change is real.

I really believe that "ecomodernist" is a misnomer. This school of thought is not distinguished by their embrace of technology (degrowth research also embraces technology). It is distinguished by their insistence on perpetual growth, ever-increasing aggregate output. That's it.

If i can just be a bit blunt: we don't need to do the ecomodernist nuke-bro [overconfidence -> failure] trajectory for solar+batteries

We can just skip it and plan for a more diverse and optimised system that takes full advantage of both resources, for the lowest emissions and system costs.........

If I believed this I'd simply post nice. I'd be prophesizing the inevitable victory of luxury ecomodernist market anarchism at all times
When people compare Roko's basilisk (which was more of a shitpost than a joint ideological commitment) with Pascal's wager, it glosses over how these groups do actually believe in retrocausal time manifested by the prophetic future tense; they think this stuff has already happened in the future.

Hopefully now, at least, some people will be more willing to consider whether calls for "public governance" of new technologies might not be a fig leaf for the same ol' ecomodernist advancement of fossil capital's interests.

I am inevitably going to end up on a "hopium tech-smooching ecomodernist Bright Green Lies renewable lovers" blocklist / modlist at some point and........it's fine? I strongly encourage you to erase me from your Bluesky experience if I even slightly annoy you
Seth Abramson has lost his entire mind over one single insignificant block list that he’s on and has been on an endless rant over it and…dude…you have several hundred thousand followers it’s not actually harming you in any way!

So when I say that it is extremely important that we know now we can exist as a species without burning fossil fuels, I do so knowing that it'll satisfy the glibbest ecomodernist dudebro and it'll infuriate the most online performance-fatalists

But it's still important that we know this

7) Here we describe how ecomodernist visions and "green growth" scenarios rely on fundamentally imperialist assumptions in order to maintain capital accumulation and high resource use in the core while reconciling this with ecological objectives:

Our special issue of Labor and Society on the ecomodernist features of imperialism is now online in full. The issue makes a stronger contribution to theorising contemporary imperialist dynamics than I could have ever hoped for. Here's a thread introducing each contribution. 🧵
