I'm so happy that my piece about nonbeenary monks made it into this wonderful issue of postmedieval! Alongside some great pieces of ecotheory, gender theory, creative and imaginative figuration, links between Italy and Asia... This issue is a dazzling picture of boundary-pushing research.

I'm organising (with Hunter Phillips) 2 sessions at @kzooicms.bsky.social on RETHINKING ECOTHEORY! (Sponsored by Medieval Ecocriticisms)

Please apply (by 11/15) for either DISENTANGLING ECOCRITICISMS (tinyurl.com/ICMS2027-S1) or DISAPPOINTING ECOCRITICISMS (tinyurl.com/ICMS2027-S2).
CALL FOR PAPERS: ICMS (KALAMAZOO) 2027 RETHINKING ECOTHEORY This pair of sessions (sponsored by Medieval Ecocriticisms) questions ‘entanglement’ as the predominant idiom of ecocritical thinking, arguing that the medieval past both yields and necessitates alternative ways of thinking about our ecological investments, both affective and ontological. Drawing upon recent critiques (e.g. Swarbick and Tremblay 2024), this pair of sessions interrogates the limits of ‘enmeshment’ as the predominant idiom for ecocritical approaches to the premodern past. Although the (specifically European) premodern past is often identified as ‘The Green Middle Ages’ (e.g. Chavannes-Mazel 2023, Kehnel 2024), these sessions question the recuperation of this period as one of ethical, reciprocal, and harmonious relations between humans and the natural world. Session 1: DISENTANGLING ECOCRTICISMS How can ecocritical discourse benefit from attuning to bodies and environments in the Middle Ages for whom entanglement is either a problem or an impossibility? We welcome papers that “rethink nature as a limit” (Swarbrick & Tremblay, 2024), considering how the natural world or “Nature” in the Middle Ages makes demands on precarious bodies in a precarious world where uncomfortable boundaries trouble or refuse entangled thinking. APPLY: tinyurl.com/ICMS2027-S1 Session 2: DISAPPOINTING ECOCRITICISMS We invite papers which grapple with the disappointing, dissatisfying, and disconcerting relationalities embedded within medieval ecological imaginaries or practices, or the ways in which the premodern past eludes our desire for eco-motional rescue. We welcome papers from any area of medieval studies that explore the bad feelings that attend medieval relations with the environment, and problematize contemporary theorisations of a harmonious, reciprocal mesh. APPLY: tinyurl.com/ICMS2027-S2 DEADLINE: SEPT 15 Contact: Hunter Allen Phillips (hap48@cornell.edu) and Basil Arnould Price (basil.price@oneonta.edu)

“A human plants a tree; the tree bears fruit; the fruit sustains the human. This reciprocal exchange reflects a balance of agency across species and systems. When this balance is disrupted—particularly by an ecological catastrophe—the consequences are dire.”

Sometimes he lobs his insults directly, sometimes he only hints at them, but there are many, and they are ugly.

Want to learn more about eco-theory *and* willing to spend time with this terrifying bear? Evan Gottlieb's "Eco-Theory & Annihilation" has you covered, explaining cultural representations of climate change as seen in Alex Garland's Shimmer-tastic sci-fi thriller.

On the left, the cover of the book "Eco-Theory and Annihilation," with one blue circle with a woman's face (Natalie Portman from the film ANNIHILATION) intersecting one green circle with a germinating plant. On the right, another image from ANNIHILATION in which Portman's character quivers in fear as a skeleton-bear with big canines looms behind her.

I just found out that there’s a textile recycling bin not four miles away from me in Asbury Park, NJ where I can drop off the holy socks, dead tote bags, and other stuff that I can’t donate. I’ve been collecting these things for the last few years. I might be more excited than I should be.

And in the midst of that, I keep noticing disturbing little details about Vance. So I connected some dots.
